Once you grow up, and become an adult, what constitutes being a good child?

Personally I would say the main thing is to spend time with them. If you are far apart it can be talking, communicating via e-mail or whatever.

    Picking the right nursing home.

Seriously, establishing a financial plan to address the potential need for long-term care is essential. Other than that, there's not much that you wouldn't do for anyone you care about: stay in touch, make sure they're active and well, let them spoil their grandchildren.

I agree with everything so far. And as they age, help them with final directives so you and their doctors know what they want done as their life draws to a close. If they can do that while they're fairly healthy, it will be way easier on them and you when they finally get seriously sick.

That's gloomy, maybe, but it makes such a difference in how those last days or weeks go. Most states have standard forms you can fill out and notarize to record your final wishes.

On the happier side, spend as much time with them as you can, and the older they get, the more time, if possible. Call them on the phone, send them funny cards, go in person when you can. Get them a basic computer and teach them how to use the internet and email them pictures and short videos. Keep them part of your life.

All that said, if your parents are truly toxic, and some are, you are not obliged to continue ruining your life by hanging around them. That's a sad reality for some. I think the intent of this post, though, is how to be a good adult child to folks who have been OK parents to you - not perfect, not great, but OK.
