This thread is what it says on the tin.

I have to confess this sin now though... I have never actually read LoTR  .

A Song of Ice and Fire Series (can't put it to one book with that really) or Winter King by Bernard Cornwell.

I can't choose only one so:

Jack Higgins - The eagle has landed
    George Orwell - 1984
Nikos Kazantzakis - Freedom or death
Ken Follet - The pillars of earth
Leon Tolstoy - War and peace
    Clive Barker - Weaveworld
Daniel Keys Moran - The ring
Jack London - Call of the wild

For me it would be "Spares" by Michael Marshall Smith. It's just such an interesting read. Weird, yet the detective/crime is just superbly written.

If I had to choose one, I'd say 'Moon Palace' by Paul Auster.

Wish it wouldn't be so depressing, though.

At the risk of being VERY boring, my favourite is still 'The Lord of the Rings'. Astronomical popularity has not dulled the appeal of this book in my eyes.

Sorry for being so cliche, but..."The Lord of the Rings".

Although, Richard A. Knaak's "The Legend of Huma" and Salvatore's "Homeland" and "The Crystal Shard" come close behind.

I've always had a soft spot for Feist's Magician series.

As to non-fantasy I would have to go with Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising

[IMG] The books I've enjoyed a lot were from the Death Gate series by Hickman and Weiss. Not the best books around, but I liked the world and story and had a good feeling afterwards.

Ken Follet's "The Pillars of Earth" kept me reading for days until I finished it. I also liked Huxley's "Brave New World".

"L'écume des jours" by Boris Vian. Or anything by Balzac.

Between Pratchett's "Mort", Jordan's "The Wheel of Time", and "Harry Potter", I have to say that HP takes the lead by a finger-nail. Shared second-place. ;)

Either Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, or The Truth, by Terry Pratchett. Night Watch by Pratchett comes a close second, followed by Weis & Hickman's last book of the Death Gate Cycle.

The best book I have ever read is "Illusions" by Richard Bach. It's short but with a great philosophical depth... it can change your life.

Well for sci-fi/fantasy for me it would be Ender's Game and LOTR. Outside of this I would say Vonnegut and Gabriel Garcia Marquez both write great stuff but Catch-22 might be my favorite.

Robin Hobb's - Farseer & Tawny Man Trilogies
and Mervyn Peake's - Gormenghast Trilogoy

Both wonderfull, but for very different reasons. Don't think they will ever be knocked off my number one spot.

I would have to say that The Elf Stones of Shannara is one of the best books i have read, and of course the Lord of the Rings.

Jingo by Terry Pratchett, or any others from the Discworld series.
