  2. Two Memories

I was a 10 level Barbarian in the Dragonslayer D&D series, with a mage (grr, I never did like mages) and some npcs. We were walking through the mountains, on the way to find that crazy wizard, and we were ambushed by three orcs.

Going into a rage, I attacked the three on my own. I did not even draw my weapon, but went for the throat of the lead orc. I got a critical bite on his head, (rolled a 20) grappled with him (rolled 18 or 19), and threw him (had thrown weapon skill LOL rolled a 15 or so) at the other orcs. They were rather perplexed at my strategy and, upon being squashed by a bloody flying orc, went into a panic. We pelted them with arrows and magic as they ran about, but I had the killing blow on all three.

In an equally barbaric deed, we found this big dragon. It breathed cold stuff. Very bad. I think it was blue.

We were stupid to even try to take it on, but that was no hinderance.

I confered with the GM: How strong would I have to be to pick the dragon up, expose his weak spot to our archer, and then let the archer have a called shot at his exposed area?

Well, it wasn't an elder dragon, blah blah, he decided it would take first reaching him in non-popsicle state, then a grappling roll to get under him for the lift, then a grappling roll to lift him (he said it was possible, with 22 strength, to lift him up enough to get a shot at his underbelly.)

Someone casted resist heat/cold and off I went. BOOM 40 points gone, beard turns blue. I made it to the big snake. He was talking and laughing at me for being really stupid and wasn't taking my tactics very seriously.

I got up under him, and I did not make the grappling roll. But he raised up to kill me, the archer shot, rolled a 99 (needed 99 or 100, in the way the GM had figured it) and in three rounds, dead dragon.

We got lots of experience points for that one.

I was running a game while in the service, stationed in Germany. The group had met with Sortiarius, 33rd level wizard. One of the members of the group,a mischevious Gnome Fighter/Illusionist, was getting frustrated by his vague answers to their questions and decided to call him a "Crusty Old Toad". He was subsequently polymorphed into a "Crusty Old Toad". The rest of the group thought this was very funny, until they had to convince the powerful mage to return their friend to his natural state. Needless to say , They had to perform a favor for him.

[IMG] I think my players worst memories must be my crappy critical hit tables that always cut the arms and legs off their characters.
    (Hehehe) :D

My most memorable adventure must be when one of my players became obsessed by the idea of getting a troll bodyguard. I still don't know what the heck the point was. Anyway: Every time the group encountered one he would try to tame it. He even went so far to gain control of a goblin tribe and used them as bait.
Of course their morale was very low when their umptenth comrade was eaten.
He had also been very irresponsible with his spendings so gold were a real problem.
So now what? Naturally he had his goblins pillage the nearest villages.
He then used the gold to persuade a powerful archmage into transforming his goblins into trolls. Such a spell didn't exist so I made a random table to see what happened.
The spell failed even though he was an archmage so a lot of goblins died, some turned into variable creatures and a lot of them into somekind of mongrelman.
Then he demanded the wizard should cast the spell again. So then the spell failed again!
So even more goblins died, turned into variable creatures and mongrelmen.
A single turned into a troll.
Then the player demanded that the mage made everything right again.
I tried to explain to him that he simply didn't have enough magic left to cast it, and even if he could it would be the death of the goblins...wich weren't goblins anymore. So then he wen't ballistic and attacked the archmage.
I think it's fairly obvious what happened next... :D

    Hey,
I have one RPG memories. First was when I was playing D&D in my old school in england. After I left the school, about 6 months later, one of the kids died. We got the group back together a final time and we honored him, it wasnt actually anything to do with D&D but it was the group so it kinda counts. That is probably the most memorable point of my life.

[IMG] I was playing a ranger, dual wielding a long sword in my main hand and a hand-axe in my off hand.

Attacking some beast (can't remember) I rolled a one with my hand-axe and the DM ruled that I had thrown it into a tree.

My dwarf friend yells at me, "Ranger, we're ambushed by a horde of ogres, and you're attacking the woods!?!"

I replied, "There was a squirrel on the tree."

    "So what?" He asked.

I replied "It was an ugly squirrel!"

We laughed about that for months.

    Lol!

I was going through the Spine of the World and we got to some trolls and they attacked us. Of course we attacked back. My spells were all used up and I didn't have the nerve to flee. None of my weapons were fire/ice/acid so they fell down one by one...I kept on attacking and finally I had to use my detonation arrows. I killed both my mage and the 5 trolls. *sigh*

i was playing a character, a lvl 29 drow abjurer (we had a very "loose" dm).
anyway, we entered some kind of dungeona and in it was 3 elder blue dragons, i got really freaked and started casting abjuration spells like crazy, not realizing that the entire group was invisible and the dragons hadnt even noticed, that is until i decided to hit them with a barrage of fireballs and lightning strikes. whoops was all i could say as we were being torn limb from limb by dragons.

[IMG] Ever though you always roll something lousy?
    Try to beat this...

I was playing a game of warhammer and after a good first round, I though I finally had a chance of winning a battle. Then one of my units is hit by a catapult so I have to take a panic test. "No sweat" I thought. My general was close and he had 10 Ld.
So then I roll an 11 and have to test for the nearest unit. Another 11. And another.
And another. So much for that army.
My other real bad luck was when I was playing in a tournament.
My army of fair-play was quite doomed against the hordes of power-play but I though I might stand a chance if I could bring his units down and run away from his characters. My first attempt was with my bolt thrower. Great! I needed a 2+ to hit.
Of course it was a one. Then I was hit by a spell. Great! I needed a 2+ to avoid it.
Another one. Then I cast a devastating spell.
He needed a 6 to avoid it. So he rolls a 6.
Then I tried with an assain. Needs 2+ to wound and kill. Another 1.

That also reminds me of when one of my players rolled up a new character.
It looked quite good to start with. High strength, good health and an impressive 2 metres tall. Looked like he was going to be one hell of a fighter.
A few rolls later the character was the clumsiest, dumbest, ugliest, most unwise character in the world.

[IMG] Bad rolls! Not funny when they're happening, but LOL now! :)

Reminds me of a time . . . (sound like Jan now)

Playing an archer and had a +5 Elven Great Bow with some pretty kick arrows.

Our party rounded the corner in a dungeon and stumbled across a medium sized white dragon, only a few feet in front of us.

The barbarian charges, the mage began to cast a spell, and I unleased a volley of 3 arrows from Point Blank Range.

    First roll: 20
    Second roll: 20
    Third roll: 1

Result . . . the two critical hits kill the dragon (which had been rearing up to strike) and topples it onto of the Barbarian.

My last roll of a "1" caused me to roll a saving throw for my bow. It missed it, and broke the string (you know how hard it is to find +5 Elven Great Bow strings????)

When the mage looked up from his spell book, he saw two babarian legs sticking out from underneath a dead dragon, and an elven ranger cradling his bow in his arms and crying like a baby.

[IMG] I'll start with my best D&D memory. About 12 years ago when I was still playing with my original AD&D group our DM trapped us in a old castle. We had 3 NPCs with the party, a Paladin, fighter and thief. Our party was a mage, druid and 2 fighters. The 3 NPCs were overpowered by a cursed item and attacked us. I remember running from room to room in this castle trying to escape and being chased the whole way. We never knew where the NPCs were and when they were going to attack. It was the most scary monent in D&D for me.

My best RPG memory ever was from when I was running a GURPS cyberpunk campaign in high school. I had setup this whole plot with one of my PC to become a sonic knight, a jedi like warrior with this cool sonic sword. He has gone through months of adventures getting the weapon and training to use it.

So as a final show down I setup this fight scene on top of a skyskrapper. The team was ready to leave, they were in a chopper hovering above the roof, when the enemy sonic knight walked out onto the roof. He challaged my PC, Ice to a duel. Ice turned on his sonic blade and advanced.

It was like a scene from a movie; bodies all over the place from the attack, the chopper circling, floud lights sweeping around the area and the two warrior approaching for combat.

At this point one of the other PC's who had been out cold, woke up and climbed the stairs to the roof. He saw the enemy sonic knight with his back to the door at the top of the stairs. He shot him in the back with a stunner, rolled a critical hit. He knocked the enemy sonic knight out and then ran up and cut this throat with a knife.

He destoryed my great scene, and Ice's players was pissed this he did get to have his duel after months of playing up to it.

That was the best RPG memory that I have ever had. Funny the things that stick with you for dacades. :)

As a player my favourite one was while playing a peddler (wandering salesman to those not in the know) in Warhammer. We had been in this big city for a few days and noticed all the strange goings on. We had also had to make use of the sewers to get away from a few fights and the DM had been working on our nerves by adding the odd 'splosh' and 'plop' noise while we were chatting. By the time we were in the sewers a third time we were all seeing monsters in shadows and jumping at any noise at all.

Now to fully understand the situation you also need to know that Warhammer also uses a die roll for a 'cool' check. Basically it's a stat to see how brave and unflappable your charcater is. Needless to say, peddlers aren't renouwned for their bravery so when the sewer monster did finally make his attack I failed the cool roll big time and froze. There's the mad fight going on all around in the confines of a narrow slippery sewer walkway and I'm just standing there trembling and pointing at the big monster.

After a few seconds of frantic action by the groups heroes I was allowed to roll again...... and failed. Still at this point the rest of the party were finally recovering from the surprise attack and had started a succesful counter attack. Time for another role, which I passed, just. So in true role playing fashion, I panicked and tried to 'run away' ........ straight into several key party memebers and so knocking us all off the walkway and into the sewer stream......... with the monster. I was not popular.

As a DM I have a few memories that stick out. All Starwars (West End Games version) related. The first was a mate of mine who had a very technical charcater who wasn't particularly brave (think Viller in Blake 7). Anyway, during his character creation process he tried to get more than was fair (doesn't everyone). In particular he wanted to have a toolbox that would be full of all the tools he would ever need. He also thought that this should be automated and follow him around so his hands would be free if he ever got surprised. I agreed to all this but didn't tell him about the penalty I impossed to balance it a bit. He started to get suspicious when he began to notice that his mobile toolkit was slowly getting decorated with travel stickers - from places he had never been. Basically I rolled every day to see if the toolkit had got bored and decided to wander off on its own.

The highpoint though was later when we all watching Starwars together. It was at the point on the Deathstar when Han and Luke are dressed as Stormtroopers to escort Cheewie to the prison block. Anyway, as they walk around the corner my mate suddenly jumps to his feet and shouts "there's my bloody toolbox" - the little black robot the Cheewie scares - OK maybe you had to be there.

Then there was the time when the group was being chased through an Imperial base. Viller was pretty good at overiding the locks and so decided to shut the blast doors behind them. As this was a bit slow, one of the gung-ho characters (Steve Bywater I think) got bored and decided it would be quicker to just blast the locks. The Ewok in the group saw what fun this was and so decided to give it a try too......on the blast door they were running towards.

The imperials thought it was funny.

And finally, learning how succeful the 'sploosh' technique mentioned above could be; I used to use this sort of thing quite often to build up tension. One of the characters a world weary frontier scount started looking around in all the dark corners available while the rest of the group started to get worried. Ah good I thought, he's thinking of arranging an ambush I thought. So I asked him what he wanted to do.

"I need a dark corner somewhere, all this tension is gettng to me and I need to pee."

Oh yeh memories of D&D eh?

Well once I was attacked by three (count 'em) Sword Spiders and killed. This was five minutes into my first game. I honestly couldnt be arsed doing all the character sheets again so I have never looked at D&D since...

Lol! This memory is a lot more funnier and happier. My thief had C'Fury and she was hiding in shadows, and she went around the whole entire place without getting caught. Then she went to the "important" mage and backstabbed him. Octuple 500 damage and the mage was blown to smitherings. :D

D&D Basic, I think it was roughly 1980 or 1981, Module B1 "The Keep on the Borderlands"
    I was 9 years old (I think).

    I'm playing a thief.
My cousing was DMing, there were a bunch of people in the game, we stop at a dungeon door, and listen, and hear noises behind it.

So we knock on the door, and the fighters back up waiting for the whatever to come through, and I hide behind the door as it opens. Kobolds (this is a level 1 dungeon we're talkin here...) come rushing in, and the fighters start hitting them. The Kobold Chieftan comes through last, and I step out and stab him in the back.

    He drops dead.

    I was hooked.
