Can you meet a NPC and make him join your party?

I've played Icewind Dale a long time ago, with 6 characters I created at the start, and had to stick with them. I can't remember that they spoke to eachother. Later I've played Baldurs Gate 2, where you meet NPC's who team up with you, and you can drop them and accept others at your choice, and they all come with their own things ready and on a certain level when you meet them. In addition to this, they talk with you and eachother, so there's a lot of conversation.

Now I've been wondering about my Icewind Dale game ... that was the first ever roleplaying game I tried ... and I see that the games of Icewind Dale and Baldurs Gate are very alike in many ways... was I supposed to create every character myself in ID, or did I do something wrong back then? Was I supposed to interact with NPC's the same way in ID as in BG? Should I have met characters who would join my quest? Is it possible to have conversations with the characters in your party like in Baldurs Gate? Or is this the main difference between ID and BG?

Nope, you did everything right. That is the main difference between the BG games and IWD.
