I agree with you about being grateful for the lack of a majority. That should prevent the worst of his radical right-wing social agenda from becoming law, while allowing the more common-sense based programs - social or economic - to happen. If the conservative ideal of "the government that governs least, governs best" holds, Harper should be happy. He's in a situation where he likely won't be able to do much of what he sees as "good", but one can only hope that he won't be able to do much harm, either. ;) How disgusting that politics has descended into such cynical depths that the best thing that one can hope for is stalemate!

Canada might have ended up with the best possible situation, but only time will tell.

I voted for Harper -- I LIKE his right wing agenda -- it certainly beats the communization of Canada that the NDP would have thrust on us, and I like MANY other Canadians, do not like the increasing permissiveness that Canadian institutions have been ramming down the throats of the country under the guise of "rights".

I know some Ukes from the diaspora in Canada - some Polacks and people from former Jugoslavia as well - and everything I heard so far is that Canada is a disgustingly ultra leftist Nation, so I am quite glad this guy has won.

Although I'm too young to vote, I definately would have voted against Harper. I would have voted Liberal, if only for the money he planned on giving university students (which I shall be next year). But oh well, this is the second bet thing.

Unfortunately yes... Bah If I had the age I'd vote green party! Harper is just another bush wanabe. Meh, I still wonder what Québec is doing in the constitution... oh well.

Ecology is far more important that those political babblings. We can't survive as humans if the earth don't!

Damn, now where are our liberals supposed to threaten to go after each lost election. I can't see them liking Mexico. :)

The Liberals had over a decade to do something to help University students out -- they didn't. i doubt they would have followed through on their promise to give aid this time.

As for Quebec, the Bloc took a hit, losing a fair number of seats in La Bell Provence. That should tell them that their dreams of ripping apart a good Confederation for the appeasement of small minorities wishing to trample on the rights of other minorities are nothing but trash and will never amount to anything.

In Holland we grow up with left wing ideals. the education system is left, the media is left so figure out where people go. But strangely we now have a middle right government so anything can happen. It had to do with fear and sucurity. One of our filmmakers got whacked by a stupid kid that listened to his religious leader who fled the county.

Is this what also occured in Canada?

From the few scraps of information we get concerning canada, we know where it is, I understand that it is a lot more liberal than the USA.
And that is a good thing for average Joe.

All I can say right now is, I agree with Beren. Harper as the leader of a Conservative majority would probably be one of the worst things for Canada. At least this way, there is more of a check and balance system in place.

Also Harper is in a situation right now where he has to tread very softly and not upset the boat. I'm sure that he knows very well his situation that there could very easily be another election in two years if upsets enough people.

I didn't vote for Harper. He is one of those people that looks like he has a very ugly agenda hidden just under the surface of his holier-than-thou attitude. (Well, ok, most politicians do.) It is a gut instinct with me that Harper is worse than most and I do trust my instincts.

It's just you Fel, just you.

I didn't vote for Harper either. But I couldn't bring myself to vote for the Liberals, because of the representative in my riding. He hasn't impressed me in all the years that he's been elected. So I went for NDP.

Funny you mention that, Blog -- Given the NDPs communist leanings and anti-religious positions, I was quite surprised to find out my own father (about as religious as you can get without being hauled up to heaven in a bath of light) voted for the pinkos. I was floored.

Harper may have an agenda, but it's no worse than the agenda the Liberals have to promote the homosexual lifestyle, make abortion the most common form of birth control, and punish Farmer Bob for the sins of urban thugs. I guess (and this fully applies to me as well) that the sinisterness of an agenda lies in the eyes of the beholder.

I voted Conservative this time around. Not because I'm in favour of Harper's platform of intolerance and bigotry towards anyone who isn't just like him (OK, that was a bit over the top, but still...), but because I just couldn't stomach the thought of rewarding the Liberals for their corruption. I'm just relieved it's a minority government.
