Canadian postal strike

That’s a joke. What does the union want – that the rules proposed for new employees be applied to existing employees as well? Of course not. Canada Post would love to change pension benefits for all employees, but they know that would be an almost impossible battle to win, so they are simply grandfathering benefits for existing employees, but the union wants to penalize the employer for giving them a concession.

I love this. The wage increases in the legislation are the same as other public sector increases. The government basically wanted consistency.

I am totally with Canada Post here. The union just isn’t facing the realities of the current demand for postal services. And competition isn’t just from couriers; the internet plays a huge role as well – letters (email), bill payments, ordering etc. can all be done online, and thus reduces the need for snail mail.

I spent 2 years in the USPS. The old guys are making a bundle and hte new guys aren't making crap. But I ahd no problem with that, even as a new guy. Why? Because the entire country is going that route. Paid Benefits have become a thing of the past, as are Pensions. With the changes in business, as the Global Business model is the new thing, companies just can't keep paying out big bucks for non-degree jobs. It is really that simple. Why everyone has a problem figuring this out is mind-boggling.

 

Still - that would suck if you actually do rely on mail service to pay your bills. I do pay a lot of mine online, but most of my utility bills I still send in via snail-mail.

 

And I'm waiting for a book to be delivered from Canada. Was hoping it would sort it self out when the government stepped in - but alas, looks like I'll be waiting a bit longer.
