2 part question, 1st does every character now start with 100 gold unlike the original that went by your class and are there any items that you come across that are worth more $ on the outside world like maybe the star sapphire or are you better off selling everything to Winthrop?

You might get a better sale value on the outside, but money is no benefit if you've been killed by the first Gibberling due to not buying enough equipment

Winthrop has decent prices. There are very few merchants who will buy your stuff at higher rates and even then the difference is minimal.

He does have a fairly high depreciation rate though (20%), so make sure you sell your stuff in bulk.

His selling prices are nothing special, a standard 150% rate, but you'll still want to buy some basics from him.

As for the starting gold, I believe it's the same for everyone now since the Child of Bhaal is the Child of Bhaal, regardless of class.

And Gorion always gives you the same amount of gold as well.

This can be annoying if for some reason you start out with points in the katana proficiency, needing 635 GP to buy one off winthrop.
As far as i know katanas are otherwise far and few between as well, the first place you can otherwise pick one up probably being in beregost.
At least they don't suffer from breaking from the iron plague.

But that is the consequence of specialising in what is a weapon from a land several thousand miles away from the Sword Coast - Very rare and hence very expensive.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

    (One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
    1d12 Damage
    19-20 x4 Crit
    +2 to hit and damage
    Counts as Masterwork

    (Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
    2d10 Damage
    17-20 x4 Crit
    +5 to hit and damage
    Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

(BROTIP: This is copypasta that is older than Jesus. It is not to be taken seriously.)
(BROTIP2: Katanas are garbage, both in-game and IRL. Just don't.)

So, can you collect 635 gp to buy that Katana before you walk out of there?
