I've two OS installed on me desktop Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows XP pro and an external USB Hard Drive. I want to modify the fstab file to mount the two partition to ~/windows and ~/disk respectively (no need to modify Linux's mount point :p )

Yeah I'm not entirely sure what the arguments do beyond the file system column, so I guess "defaults" ought to do the tricks.

Unfortunately they don't mount at boot -- what the hell must I do? Since when I want to mount them I got the message I need to be root to do so.

I'm no Linux-wizard either, if I were I wouldn't have this problem, meh

I'd guess it's because the lines you created are not complete. "defaults" is only for the default options; there are two more fields after the options field (i.e. dump and pass).

I'd suggest adding " 0 0" to the end of each line you added. Also while you're at it, there are no commas between fields, there are only spaces or tabs between fields. There are commas between multiple entries in a field (e.g. you don't need a comma after fat32 or ntfs unless you were adding more file system types).
