[IMG] I know it's tough to make a decent remake, but I think this was the worst remake of a movie I've ever seen! Give me the old 60s original Willy Wonka!!

Gene Wilder blows Johnny Depp away! I heard this version is closer to the book...If it is, I doubt I'll ever read it!

I saw the original when I was a little boy, and if I saw it on television, I'd watch it. Not this one. Although the FX are obviously better than the original, this recreation had no soul. Depp make Wonka seem wooden and unoriginal. There is very little character development, and I found myself not caring about any of the characters in the film - none of them are memorable in any way.

My advice: Save your money and wait for video...This remake is weak!

I thought it was funny at parts, but the author said that this version was closer to the book, or so I read. Johnny Depp was a little more quiet and creepy. The 60's one was too, but.. I dont remember.. In the book, he is more crazy then both of them. The Oompa Loompas were very creepy in the first one, but this one, they were...frightening. Their songs were better I thought, and funny.

I would recommend seeing it, maybe. *chuckle*

You may think totally different though, so see for yourself!!

Did anyone else think this was more of a 'Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory' rather than 'Charlie and...'?

I was very confused as to where people were from, eg Charlie and his family had English accents, but Charlie was offered cash in $'s instead of £'s for his ticket, and the little rich girl's accent was not consistant either.

Actually this version was not exactly true to the original book by Roald Dahl.

Overall the movie was okay, but definately does not live up to its hype.

Impressive, considering Roald Dahl died in 1990. Perhaps it was his daughter who said this? :hmm:

I didn't watch either nor did I read the book but I did saw the Johnny Depp trailer and sort of thought that the story goes this way:

A tale of a really pale-skined guy with untold riches and famous all thoughout the world. Pushed himself into self exile from the world and build an incredible chocolate factory (or is it a mansion). Had a knack for outrageous fashion and entertainment. Actually built himself an amusement park complete with rides and performers. He invites kids, especially boys, to his amusement park. And after several rides and chocolates and probably lots of popcorns and sodas, he finally ask one boy to stay with him. Whoa! Wait a minute... is this really written in a book? Or is this blatant depiction of Michael Jackson's so-called life?
    :D

Shame really, I had high hopes for this film. Well, by high hopes I mean I had hoped Depp would make it bearable :/

I read the book before I saw the original movie, and I was absolutely appalled. Even as a kid I could recognize that the vast majority of Dahl's rather biting wit had been stripped away. The Oompa-Loompah's were significant in the book, but horrid little travesties in the movie. Gene Wilder did his usual stellar job, but the rest...<shudder> The screenwriters took social commentary and turned it kiddie-comedy.

I want to see the new one BECAUSE it's supposed to be closer to the book!

Strange, because I considered Wilder's Wonka to be very wodden. (Try saying that when you're drunk.)

Depp offered some depth to the role, and the Wilbur Wonka side-story was a nice little touch.

The only thing I really disliked were the Oompa Loompa songs.

I've seen the first movie and I honestly don't know what makes you all delight in it so much. This whole interest is a big surprise to me.

Likely it is nostalgia for a beloved book of one's childhood.

I didn't see the new version but I really liked the old one, It was like a trip. A big halucinating ride through a rollercoaster packed with speakers and spinning collered wheels...

I'm still wondering if I will make this ride again as I see the new one...

I got a little dissapointed with this one. People said it was the best Burton movie ever and so on. But it was not that good IMO. Too many stupid songs, too much fancy stuff. The book and the original movie are far better. Johnny Depp did okay, but nothing special IMO

Well at least i wasnt directly bored :D

Hmm. I liked it. Never seen the 60s version, but it didn't have oompa-loompas.

It's not really a remake of that film, is it? It's a film based on the book. Johnny Depp's acting was quite good, I thought. That man could seriously act. His interpretation of Wonka was considerably different from the book, but still.

Now, if he hosted a show each week with five children being taken in his chocolate factory and each being eliminated until one is left, I would SO watch that.
