I've been searching for those old chess games, but can't find any on all those abandonware servers... But they can't just have gone, all of them. Psion Chess, Battle Chess... Heh.

Does anyone know of a working link where you can *for sure* find them? Google results won't serve -most of them are crap not even related to the game in mention, but for some reason enlisted as valid results (as always with oldies, heh).

If you have an amiga emulator working with your OS the possibilities are endless.

    Try this one for example
    http://amigos.amiga.hu/ancientoys/aj.html

FOr PC? I dunno. You will have to check with Taluntain. I remember something about it beeing illegal or something. And wouldn't want things to get messy here. :)

Thanks. Here's Chess Software Museum. Everything is perfectly legal there:

http://www.gambit chess.com/pub/progr.htm (erase the space when you copy the link, it would change the middle part into stars if I didn't put a space there)

Not that I was asking for what I could have found myself equally as well: it was by accident that I found this one. Go and check. Psion Chess is the chess of my childhood. Battle Chess is nice, too. I'd like to find Battle Chess 4000 somewhere (it's abandonware and I downloaded it sometime ago before I formatted my disk - now it's gone and I can't find it again :( ).

    Check this .

I just saw it's just a demo but other sites directed me to chips and bits. So maybe it isn't abandonware.

Abandonware is legally free to copy, download etc. You can still buy original game release disks or CDs from those willing to part with them or from the company if they still have some left. Sometimes, though, abandonware sites webmasters are badly informed. Heh.

Chev, I'm looking for Battle Chess for you. I've seen it before, I just have to find the site I saw it at.

    Edit: found it: http://www.bhlegend.com/php/show.php3?game=25

[IMG] Abandonware is illegal, and those websites who say it isn't are the ones which are badly informed.

Here's a FAQ note on this from one of the largest abandonware sites:

    But isn't abandonware illegal?

Unfortunately, yes. Despite the fact that publishers no longer derive revenues from these games since they have stopped selling them (and any revenues from retailers that still sell them were gained a long time ago, at the time of sales), it is illegal to distribute them so long as copyright holders have not released them into the public domain, and 95 years after the games' release have not elapsed.

But as I said before, I'm not going to disallow posting about it here because personally I believe abandoned games should be made free. But at least I expect the people to understand that they're not technically legal and not go announcing around to the world that they are, because with the exception of the few games officially made free, they are NOT legal to copy and distribute freely.

But anyway, we've had this discussion before and I don't want to turn this topic into another as there is nothing to discuss here, so let's get back on topic.

Tal surely by its very definition abandonware is legal, it is just what the label applies to that causes the problems. If through time or inclination a publisher gives up any copyright on a title, hence it becoming abandonware, that is perfectly legal. Whereas many games found on abandonware sites are those where no one actually does give up their rights to the title, yet cannot be contacted and have not tried to exploit it for financial gain.

And back to the orginal topic, Battle Chess was fantastic, and it was capable of playing a decent game. I remember one title that it didn't show any thinking, and as such you could play exactly the same game time after time. Being a fan (generally not for the game) a fan of the English Opening, that turned out to be a weak point for that program. Sadly I forget the name.

[Which part of my post didn't you understand? Anything copyrighted is illegal to copy until 95 years expire. Something doesn't become "free for all" just because its maker is not actively exploting it. Abandonware is not a term lawyers coined up, it was created by people who pirated the games to mark any old games not officially supported any more, not just the ones which were actually released as freeware later.] -Tal

    English opening and its name?

If it is c4, there is no name as far as I know. Only in sub-variants and battlechess is so poor that I hardly believe its opening book is that complete.

    EDIT;
Or do you mean another software chess program? Uups I think you do. I wasn't quite sure what you wrote. Sorry. heh
