Choppy Gameplay: Help

Lately I've been noticing that my gameplay gets annoyingly choppy, with regards to both the movement of things on the screen and the movement of my mouse cursor across the screen when playing BG2. I haven't had this problem before. It does not seem to coincide with the installation of any mods or anything like that.

Is there any advice you guys could give me as to general methods to combat choppiness? Like what color setting should BG2 and my computer be at? and should I enable acceleration? Any tips at all that might help this would be greatly appreciated, as right now I can only play for like 15 minutes at a time before becoming quite frusterated.

If it makes a difference, I've also been noticing choppiness when I use flash stuff in general (apart from BG), like youtube videos or flash-based chat clients.

I had similiar problems. My cause was big bad mods.

Too many mods would cause such a problem. A new and cleaner installation would fix it. This should probably be a last-resort solution though.

An extremely full bag of holding also is known to cause choppiness. Reduce the items in your bag of holding.

Try to disable enviromental audio via sound options. The absence of background sounds really make a difference in performance. Ofcourse it would not be as cool, but hey...

Too many save games may also be the cause. Who knows? Try these and see if they work.

 

Hmmh... if your whole computer is going choppy, then perhaps you should try to post in Techno-Magic.

Try to press ctrl+alt+del to bring up the menu, and then look up processor usage and the like in there to see if there's something wrong.

 

It could be a sound issue in which case you might want to install fresh drivers for your sound card. I had a similar problem where game twiched every time I clicked onto someting and new sound drivers solved it.

Another idea, although this one is a long shot, might be that your "path search nodes" are set to a high value (you can check them in the baldur.ini file).

If the game worked fine before and you haven't installed any new mods then it's a good bet it's just (another) Windows glitch, so a format c: should do the trick (you can never go wrong with format ).

 

Try defragmenting your hard drives.

 

After trying a variety of things, it is evident that I am probably just due for a reformat.

Unfortunately, my SoA cds are back home (I'm in a uni right now). I have my ToB cd here since that is what's required for running the game, but no SOA cds. My question is, is there any (reasonably simple) way to backup SoA so that all I'll need is a ToB cd to reinstall SoA+ToB, or should I just wait ~3 weeks until I visit home?
