Civilization IV... Er, so how do I do this?

    I've had Civ 4 for ages and i've never really managed to get anywhere in it, but now I intend to give it a decent go. The problem is the first 1000 years or so tend to go past massively quickly and basically nothing happens due to the fact that bulding anything seems to take forever. How the hell do you do ANYTHING in this game!?

    You wait until it is done. Play on the easiest setting, a good starting build order is warrior - settler - worker and do that in all cities. Don't overextend yourself, be careful with city placement and well wait for stuff to get done. If you dont like waiting this game probably isnt for you.

    I don't really mind waiting, but when the game starts in 4000bc and it can take 1000 years to train a warrior, I start to wonder if i'm doing something wrong.

    Edit: What sort of area should I look for to found my first city?

    Next to water, with plenty of natural resources nearby, preferably ones that you'll need.

    Ignore those times, they'll speed up once your cities grow in population. It's very addictive once you get into it pal.

    My main gripe with Civ is that units become redundant very quickly when you're a big researcher (like me).

    You found your first city where you start, it is a very very good spot. Rarely it can be improved by moving a step or two but every round missed is a disaster.

    This is such a cool game. Once you get into it, you'll figure out that those first 1000 years are so crucial. It seems like not much is happening, but a really good player will have set up the win during that time.
