Classic gaming -- D&D Order of the Griffon for Turbografx16

    I have to admit... I was THRILLED when I heard about this game. I grew up with my Sega Genesis, a console that to this very day still love, and the Turbografx was a rare beast which I unfortunately had never heard of when I was a kid.

    Powering on the game, I create a new party, and unlike Warriors of The Eternal Sun, you have to pick your party of four from pre-generated PCs. The classes are similar to WoTES -- Dwarf, Fighter, Mage, Cleric, the familiar stuff. Each class lets you choose between three different characters, with different stats. Take the Dwarf and Fighter, for example, for both classes you have a well-rounded PC, a strong PC and a tough PC. I took the toughest Fighter and Dwarf, those guys ARE going to tank, after all. Clerics have different stats, but the same spells -- the quirky exception is the Mage, depending on who you pick, you get different spells.

    Graphically speaking, OoTG is similar to WoTES. Traveling on the World map is done in a bird's eye view, and unlike WoTES, towns are in first person, just like dungeons.

    The main quest involves people being turned into vampires by a vampire, which you have to kill. Like WoTES, OoTG has a story that is lackluster, but it is a very enjoyable experience nontheless because watching your party progress is just awesome.

    I'm still in the early stages of the game, because I am lost in a stupid crypt and finding my way out is a royal PITA because OoTG DOES NOT HAVE AN AUTOMAP FUNCTION! Was this too much to ask for??? WoTES was released on Genesis, which is ALSO 16-bit, yet WoTES HAS automapping, OoTG does not. They should've done like in WoTES, shrink down the first person view in dungeons/towns a bit and use the extra space to have an automap function, because when I have to navigate a dungeon blindly or have to print out maps, this is just a buzzkiller.

    Nevertheless... despite the flaws, OoTG is definitively worth checking out if you own a TG16, and are a fan of D&D RPGs.
