Could not connect to localhost

    Alright, for the last couple months, my email on either Thunderbird (Mozilla) or Outlook Express has not worked. Whenever I hit 'get mail' on Thunderbird (I switched over a while back from OE), it thinks for a few seconds and then says: Could not connect to server localhost; the connection was refused.

    It does not tell me how to fix it, though, so I have no idea what is going on. Why is it doing this and what can I do to fix it? Any help would be much appreciated, as it is frustrating me to be so incompetent...

    Thanks if you have any ideas.

    Extremely likely your software firewall is blocking it.

    Localhost is your own computer. It cannot connect to your own computer - obviously not a hardware issue. Either windows networking is way haywire or it's your software firewall.

    Or maybe your configuration is bad? The mail server in your mail client should be set to your ISPs mail server.

    Well, I checked my McAfee firewall, and thundebird has 'full access'. My windows firewall is not on. I have Avast! installed, but the scanner/virus protection does not work with thunderbird... as in, it doesn't recognize that it is a program it needs to scan. I disabled it anyways, and there was no change.

    As for configuration, how do I check that? I couldn't find anything in thunderbird (or am I just incompetent?), but when I set it up originally for Outlook Express, it was set to my ISP's server.

    EDIT: Check the configuration... it is going through the default port on server localhost... I tried to check with Comcast for which server I am supposed to be on, but their webpage is conveniently not loading properly.

    [​IMG] The standard receiving port for e-mail is 110. If your e-mail provider allows access via webpage (like Yahoo! or Hotmail), they may have changed this without informing you, as this does not affect connectivity via web. If so, your mail client may be pointing at the correct server, but the incorrect port.

    If you can still send mail, but not receive them, this could be the problem. Get in touch with your mail provider and check what ports they use.

    Alternatively, you can just forget the whole deal by NOT using any kind of program to read your mail. For example, you can directly surf to www.gmail.com and let it automatically log you in. Prestó: email without separate program eating away resources ;)

    AFAIK, you need to know your POP3 server address and fill it out in the settings of the program. Then the program will use this address to fetch the mail like you would do on browser.

    Well, I used the program to have extra protection, and when I log on using the website, it doesn't give me all my mail... as in, it only lets in Comcast mail and stuff from MLB. Kind of annoying. And I still haven't figured out what port they use because their stupid website brings me a blank page that thinks it is done loading.
