Hey, maybe it's a bit too early to say anything, but what do you people think will happen when Castro dies? I remember he once said "Nothing, boy, nothing". But now that the time may come, I was thinking about that once again.
Would you like to see Cuba become democratic like the rest of America, or stay like a communist country?

Being the Cuban in the forums (Da, Cuban born, no not boat immigrant) I can tell you that Fidel's brother is as sick as Fidel, if not more, both mentally and psychically. He's also a torture lover, strict, and just not leadership material. My belief is that once Fidel dies (if he hasn't already) that people will revolt (slowly but surely) with help of the anti-castro movement (which have Masons in their ranks, btw.) Of course, he could really be jsut recovering and might return to the dictatorship later.

EDIT: The CIA funded Castro rise to power. They also have tried to kill him MANY times (briefcase bombs, poisonous cigars, poisonous pen needles, you name it) and will most likely also fund the end of communism. Oh yeah, for those who don't know; the US did attack Cuba once by sending a small army of trained exiled Cubans in the 80s or something.

The "anti-Castro movement" will certainly include the likes of McDonald's, Coca-Cola, RJR Nabisco and Microsoft. There will be plenty of "horray for freedom! freedom fighters, arrrrgh! For Freedom!!!" propaganda on the TV but, ultimately, it will be all about returning Cuba to its glory days of casinos and tourism and Cubans bowing and scraping to rich white people while getting fat and diabetic on unhealthy American junk food. Ah, freedom...

Oh and what does "like the rest of America" mean? Cuba is part of America? I know Iraq is, but jeez, that's pushing it.

and its seems likely the Americans will give citizenship to the ex-cuban that blown up an airliner...

I am actually surprised how the US failed to oust Castro, as they had helped to overthrow Chile's democratically elected Socialist leader in favour of a tyrant (Pinochet).

Cuba, Canada, Mexico, Honduras, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Guatemala,... All the countries who happen to share a landmass in the American continent, or are in the shores of the American continent, are also 'Americans'. The same as all countries in the landmass known as 'Europe' are 'Europeans', and those in 'Africa' are 'Africans', and so on and so forth.

The habit in the USA of designating themselves simply as 'Americans' is what causes the confusion.

I would rather not see Cuba becoming Americanised , but am not a fan of what they have going now. On the other hand I don't see how democracy and socialism (or communism, if you prefer) are mutually exclusive.

I would prefer that Castro have a policy like Hugo Chaves or Evo Morales, however the Cuban people can elect the government, just not the president.

I remember Bush once said "There ought to be limits on freedom".

How is Cuba the last castle of communism? Last I checked China was just a little bit bigger. I think the U.S. will do everything they can to bring about change in Cuba, and the Cubans for the most part will be for it. Simply re-opening Cuba to Americans will bring millions upon millions of tourist dollars to Cuba.

I don't know about that, Castro seems to be a very popular man.

I think the main US interest is based more on revenge (Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis), and offshore oil .

Cuba could have been the last castle of Communism, since neither NK or PRC is Communistic, if they were Communistic, but they're not, so they're not.

However, I do not think an uprising will come. If the US decides to "liberate" the country, the citizens will do what people worldwide does when such a thing happens; rallies behind their hated dictator. Nothing unites a people more than a foreign threat.

I think that after the Castro brothers are dead, a new person, more moderate, will come. And, with the Americans playing out their cards right(lifting the stupid blockade which makes no sense), then Cuba might turn out quite fine. They have some aspects good right now, such as healthcare, schools, and poverty, but they need to fix on other things, things that lifting the blockade can help them far more than any invasion or assassination can.

Cuba, I believe, is the last bastion of communism in the Western Hemisphere.

And is Castro popular in Cuba? That wasn't my impression since there are loads of Cubans braving the waters between Cuba and Florida in rafts to escape.

There's also loads of them supporting him, enough of them to give any invaders trouble. Add to that that people rally around dictators during an invasion, and you got a hell on earth.

Oh, and if Cuba is communistic, then Italy was fascistic during Berlusconi and Russia IS fascistic right now. Totalirism(sp?) != Communism.

The main (if not only) reason that Castro has people supporting him is because he gives those people benefits, like better jobs and such. I've known and met many a person who worshipped Castro before he came into power, and now despise him. There are hell of alot more people who hate Castro then those who like him.

People, what Fidel has is NOT Communism, it's his own form of dictatorship. He proclaimed himself communist back then in order to seek the Soviet's help, which he got.

Hope it never changes? Ah so you like 3rd world countries where people are forced to eat animals like Cats and Dogs when the hunger hits them so? You like to see people who don't support a tyrant die everyday of hunger while does who do flourish in food and riches? I'd ought to skin you alive -_-

I can't wait for Castro and his cronies to finally kick the bucket. I'm thinking Cuba will be the Las Vegas of the east coast. Let the good times roll, baby roll.

I've studied why people eat what they eat. It's a very interesting topic, with lots of different points of view. For instance, in Perú and Ecuador they eat this cute looking animal called "cuy", which seems like a rat, for special ocasions.
Back to the main topic, I'd too like to see Cuba stay like it is, only because of what they did in the early days, kicking Batista and the rest.
Also, I've heard they're doing a great job with education, sports, and health, so props to them for that. And they've got some very good musicians, like those in buena vista social club movie.
Last thing, from what I've seen on tv lately, Cuba doesn't seem that bad to me. But then, I haven't seen much. My main point is that they do as well as any other country, even with a blockade by the US.

Interesting, you would have figured that the CIA/Ike would have prefered the remains of the Spanish aristocracy that effectively ruled the isle.

And from a poli sci standpoint Cuba is technically communist, a stalinist brand at that. There are 5 (off the top of my head) different types of communism and they can so different in appearance that they aren't even recognizable as the "same" ideology such as Stalinism vs. Marxism or Stalinism vs. Trotskyism (Marx-Lenonism and Maoism would be the other two). Marxism is generally the closest to what was advocated by the Communist party in the early eighteen hundreds (the early communists wanted equal wages and direct democracy, Marx wanted the abolition of private property and direct democracy).

Right, because we're the only people in the world who call ourselves "Americans." What is the proper term "United States-ians" ?

Well what is the proper term? If the citizens of the United States don't know the proper word, then who does?
