My question is, I want to make a portrait pack for this website, and I was wondering if there were any good image editors that are free or cheap. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a combination of IrfanView and Paint Shop Pro for all my graphic work, but only IrfanView is free. PSP is available as a trial download, though.

There are completely free image manipulation programs out there (like GIMP), but I've never tried them myself.

PSP9 is pretty good, have used it for several years, so try to get that if you can. Your first pit-stop should be at www.jasc.com, or if you want to see more options: www.snapfiles.com (-> freeware, graphic tools).

I use IrfanView for converting and other simple operations performed from the menu level, while the GIMP is great for the actual work and advanced effects. Both are free.

    IrfanView: http://www.irfanview.com/

    the GIMP: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

And plain old MS Paint for pixel pecking, like Celtic knots and other such (example).

Good stuff. Thanks guys. Picasa 2 from Google is also free, it can be used to give the photo different effects and stuff, but it didn't have the kind of tools I needed to make decent pics. Hence, this post.

No problem. Take time and make good portraits. Smudge and soften brush helps you make it look like a drawing instead of a photo and clone brush works for surfaces like chain or plate mail. Playing around with whole-image colour balance helps you get the BG or NWN feeling. Lights and lens flares do wonders for holy (or unholy) characters. The rest you have to figure on your own. ;)
