OK, I've been plotting a character progress through levels, and something is unclear to me. If I have a character who is a dual wielder, he suffers a -2 penalty to his attacks with each hands (with the right feats and equipment of course). What happens when he gets multiple attacks from his BAB getting high enough. Does the -2 penalty carry over to all his attacks, or does it only apply to his origional ones made with his main and off hand? Also, if I take Improved Two weapon fighting, my character would get an additional attack with his offhand, albeit with a -5 penanty. Does this stack with the -2 penatly he already suffers with his offhand?

My personal reasoning is that the -2 penalty could be cululative for all attacks, (naturally I'm not entirely sure or I wouldn't be asking), and the -5 stacks with the -2 penalty.

The penalty certainly applies to all primary hand attacks.

The other is unclear, but my interpretation is that the additional off hand attack is at a straight -5 penalty only. That would make it one worse than normal for your off hand, and it apparently ignores whether the off handed weapon is light or not.

I'd rule that the -5 penalty stacks with the -2 penalty. That would make it in line with the main hand attacks. I have trouble imagining a person having a total -7 penalty on the second mainhand attack, while only a -5 on the second offhand attack. Or you could rule that the -5 penalty on the main hand overlaps with the -2 on the first attack too, for -5/-5 second attacks. That ought to make the ranger in the party happy :p

[IMG] Huh? Where do you get the -7 penalty for the second attack on the primary hand?

Anyone with the Improved Two-Weapon Fighting feat has at worst a -4 penalty on all primary hand attacks as well as a -4 penalty for the off hand attack (both improve by 2 if the off hand weapon is light).

The ITWF feat gives one more off hand attack at a -5 penalty.

    [Edit]
Oh, I think I see what you're saying; the second primary hand attack bonus is 5 less that the first primary hand attack bonus, thus it's like a -5 penalty. So what you're saying is that each extra attack made with the off hand gets the BAB of the first primary hand attack to start with! Interesting, I didn't consider that, and didn't see that stated explicitly anywhere, but it does make sense, and the stacking of the -5 and -2 penalties then makes sense as you stated...

A sixth level fighter, with ambidex and 2 weapon fighting, would get

2 attacks with the weapon in his primary hand, at +4(+6-2), and -1(+1-2).

He would get one attack with his secondary weapon, at +4(+6-2).

Culain: You are correct. But we were discussing a character with the improved two-weapon fighting feat. Assuming he meets the minimum requirements, he would then have:

2 attacks with the weapon in his primary hand, at +7(+9-2), and +2(+4-2).

2 attacks with the weapon in his off hand, at +7(+9-2), and +2(+4-2).
