When I first try to start a new game, the middle of the screen is covered with a menu, but the menu has no options to choose from, just blank tabs that you can't click. In the background, you can see the original menu, and you can click it. However, when I click "create party" (or was it "new game"?), the game crashes and I get the following message:
"an assertion failed in UIControlButtons.ccp at line number 3039"

I have the following installed, in the order written:

    Icewind Dale
    Heart of Winter
    Trials of the Luremaster
    IwD patch (v1.6)
    Aurils Bane
IwD-Ease pack (v1.1) (did not install Happy dual classing, for the record)
    Pseudo 3E Conversion Pack (v5)

What is wrong and what do I have to do to fix it?

What should a good small party look like, one that can handle HoF? I'm talking about 2-3 members, different types of chars.

I can't help you with your technical problem; you'll have to wait for one of the pros for that, but I do have some small party help.

I've currently played through to the Severed Hand with a three player party that I like a lot. It's been both easier and more fun than either of the six player parties I've gone through with. As follows:

Half-Elf Bard: leader, magic-user, loremaster, melee, archery, pickpocket, in roughly that order; with the best stats you can stand to generate (preferably low nineties).

Dwarf Fighter-Cleric: the Tank, plus clerical magic.

Halfling Fighter-Thief: archery, thieving--don't neglect backstabbing--and emergency melee.

This party has proved to be very strong, and no one has really given them any serious problems so far. The Bard's magic, my main worry, has been more than enough.

    How about this:

    Fighter/druid

    Cleric/mage (or fighter/mage/cleric)

    or

    Bard

    Fighter/druid

    and perhaps a cleric/mage

Not sure why I want a fighter/druid, I just got the idea stuck in my mind. Any particular pros/cons with a fighter/druid?

And anyone got an answer to the tech question?

If you have a bard you don't need a mage anymore. With AB they gain spell levels as fast as mages.

If you have a druid you don't need a cleric.

    I'd try

    Fighter/druid
    Bard

Make sure your fighter/druid has 18 str,dex and con, so he can tank even before he gets the powerful shapeshifts.
