Just started the game these days for the first time. A friend of mine said you could beat this game with barely engaging yourself into fights, so I did something I never thought I would have the courage to pull out: I distributed my attribute points in wisdom/intelligence/charisma and the only physical attribute I spent points was in dexterity.
Anyway, this game looks pretty open-ended and non linear in the progression department, which seems promising.
It also plays very differently from both Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale, which takes some getting use to.
Well, just wanted to share. If anyone want to add something which might increase my overall gaming experience without spoling anything...

Hmm, for your first time, 1) avoid walkthroughs like the plague, and 2) talk to lots of people. Otherwise, just enjoy; most people around here who've played PST consider it the best of the IE CRPGs...

Bion is right. Talking to people will get you a lot farther than fighting would ever do. Considering how old the game is it's very open ended and there are tons of things to do and find out.

Easily better than BG and IWD in my opinion :thumb:
Enjoy the game, keep us updated!

I see I'm not the only one playing Planescape Torment for the first time. Nice. People still discover the good old games.
I also created my character with much the same stats as you did. (I guess you've read Dan Simpson's guide, did you? :p )Wis18, Int15, Cha13, Dex11, 9 for the others. I found that using walkthroughs actually improved my BG2 experience, by cutting the amount of guesswork, since I'm not a seasoned RPG player.
I just started the game, so I'm still in the mortuary. The athmosphere, the story and style of this game look very promising, and help me to overcome the look of the graphics which are inferior to BG2.

PS - I love the slang, it really enhances the "feel" of the game. Tho, I didn't tumbled to all of it until I scanned a glossary, so you see, guides&walkthroughs&stuff sometimes do help at keeping a berk up to chant and out of the blinds...

No I didn't. I decided to build my character this way because of what my friend told me, and because I wanted a different experience than I usually have.
PS: Do I get any penalty whenever my character die?

I've been told that when you die, there are more shadows in the final areas, but I avoided dying in all but necessary circumstances, and there seemed to be plenty there...

Actually, dying is the only way to get some memories back. Dying is also a solution to some problems. Dying pays off :thumb:

Haha, the game sounds pretty open-ended indeed. Hehe, better stop asking and actually play to avoid spoilers.

    Indeed, go play.

My character was indeed worthless in fights by bg standards, and even worse by iwd standards, but I had a really good time with him, and I never encountered a necessary fight where I regretted that choice. So go ahead and have a great time with that build. IMHO, a non-combat build gets alot more out of the game than a combat build ever would.

Yup, a mage is more entertaining. Problem is I don't have much spells yet so I kinda get bruised a lot :p .

    I have some questions:
    - Do any unspent proficiency points get lost when you level up?
    - When you swap classes do you lose XP? Example: I'm a level3 fighter with 8000 XP - I swap to mage, level up a bit as a mage - then I swap back to fighter. Will I still have 8000XP as a fighter?

    1) No they are not; you will need to be a fighter to spend them, but anyone who can train you can switch you for free. If you're planning on pure mage, put as many points as possible into the Knife proficiency.

    2) No.
