After finishing IWD and HoW, I decided to finally give IWD 2 a go but after I create my party and launch, I'm instead playing with one of the default parties. I've tried creating just a single character but upon launch I'm still playing with one of the default parties.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

That seems odd. Can you give us a bit of information about your system? Are you running a newer operating system? Where is your game installed?

Yeah, first thing, you should never install old games into Program Files. Newer Windows systems don't like that.

Ideally, you should always install games somewhere like C:\Games\. Preferably a different hard drive altogether if you have more than one.

Anyway, install the game into a custom folder and then try again. If that doesn't solve the problem, report back and we'll try something else.

I have almost the same problem .. Installed IWDII and I want to create a party..

When I'm creating my 1st character and it comes to the Appearance Option, the game shuts down.

I have also Windows 10 and installed the game out of Program Files, so any suggestions are welcome :)

    1. Get properties on the folder you installed to (I will assume c:\games).
    2. Click on the security tab
    3. Make sure that "Authenticated Users" is listed, not just users
    4. Make sure that "modify" and "write" are checked under authenticated users. Also "List folder contents", "read", and "read & execute".
    5. Double check that the folders within the game inherited this by picking one at random and checking the security tab.

If it's specifically on the portrait selection, might try to move any custom portraits you may have from the custom folder to another folder and see if it still happens. If so, it suggests that one of the portraits is some invalid format, perhaps. Usually it should just not show the portrait in that case, but who knows.
