Every time either of the doors is opened into the mine, the game starts to load the new area, and then crashes. It says 'Programmer says: WED file demand failed.' What can I do?

It means that the WED file of that area is damaged or lost.
About the WED file: "Basically, it ties together the physical representation of the terrain with the tilesets. This is essentially, the map, without its containers, actors, and items. In this file is a representation of all the walls and doors, as well, grouped together by contiguity; this is presumably information used by pathfinding algorithms."

A lot of things may cause such error.
(edited or hacked game, hard disk lost data, etc.)
    1) Reinstall BG (your saves won't be uninstalled)
    2) Install the latest (final) patch (BGTosc_intl_1.3.5521.exe), and install the directx 7/8 patch for BG (BGTalesDX8intl.exe). It is more likely that the final patch will solve the problem than the DX patch.
If the game still crashes in spite of this, there might be serious problem.
It is likely that your BG install CD-s contain hacked data in advance, which is really unpleasant...
