Your character is the most powerful, regardless of class. You possess the time warp ability of save/reload. Not only is this often overlooked, but you can play multiple strategies at the same time as well as explore different approaches to a problem. Don't think of save/reload as an option. Incorporate it into your game play. I have played the game with stealth as the foremost strategy, tanking, and magic, all at the same time.
What is the best class? This question is academic. They all are, depnding on what you want to do. You can ask, what character single handed without help can win the game. Regardless of the class, it will be rough going - tanking. Team effort and strategy is much easier. I recommend playing the game through /without/ a certain type of char. Try it with mostly stealth, mostly magic, mostly distance fight ability.
The two most powerful tricks in the game are setting traps and Greater Restoration. I fudged Yoshimo into the underdark. In the Illithid lair, using caution and strategy, he alone cleaned the place out without any damage taken by any party member. Things getting nasty in the heat of battle? Viconia casting restoration cures a world of ills and hurts.
When commenting on which character type works the best, people should state under what situations and using which style of game play.

Which is the best type of character?
To test your attack abilities, keep a saved game at the bottom of watchers keep just before going up against the demogorgon. Fudge in various test characters and/or group strategies. (Use Shadowkeeper if you need to.)
Similarly, the three keys level in that keep that brings in a nice assortment of enemies helps test your strategies.
Want some real fun? Have a sanctuaried, hasted, invisible, protected char trigger all three keys at once. Toss in a gated demon of your own for added spice.
Have your fav char go one on five with the Twisted Rune crowd. (You can do it with Yoshimo alone, unassisted.)
Using careful planning and strategy I had Aerie clean out the Shadowlords fun house, unassisted, including taking out the dragon!

Why? Is this to test the power of your solo character? What's the point of such an exercise?
