GemRB V0.5.1 is out!

    The GemRB team is proud to announce a new "minor" release. A lot more work has been done on projectiles, the scripting system, effects and combat. Combined with the numerous bugfixes, this enabled the first rough, but hackless BG2:SoA runthrough!

    This is a total conversion in the absolute sense. The game engine is still being reverse-engineered and (re)written (since 2003), as there is no original source code available.

    The goal is to be less rigid to please the community (10 pc party anyone?) and also to be able to run the games on all sorts of originally unsupported platforms (in both architectural and software sense).

    So, if I wanted to play BGII-SoA, is it possible thru this engine? or IWD1 or 2? Does it require the original to be installed, making a new game in another folder on my pc? Is this basically another option to Tutu or Trilogy?

    It is possible to play all the games with gemrb, but it is in early beta stages, so I don't really recommend it to you. The current target are ie sages, modders, hackers, not the general player base yet.

    Someday it will also be able to run bgt/tutu and the like, but these mods will need slight adjustments - since gemrb has externalised a lot of the hardcoded bits, some of those new tables need to be changed by mods.

    It requires the original data, yes.

    Yeah pretty much, except that it doesn't convert BG1 to a BG2 engine (like these two do), but rather it's a multi-platform port of the Infinity Engine itself. I'm pleasantly surprised that progress is still going on this, it's getting closer to a finished product.

    Walking around with 10 Sorcerers, blasting everything in your path. 10 thieves running around Athlatka, causing massive mayhem, stealing and backstabbing at will. NICE!!!!

    I like the idea too, even though the party would be at a lower level. This would be a medium undertaking, but I'm sure the community will do it someday.

    As far as gemrb is concerned, only a variable needs to be changed from 6 to 10, but this is not enough. Someone would have to edit the original gamescripts to deal with the whole party (teleporting in cutscenes for example) and fix the gui to allow for more portraits. The script part can maybe be scripted (heh) though, so only the CHU editing would remain. :)

    edit: a windows build is now available for the beta-of-heart.
