Huh? **** like that happens even in Germany, albeit very, very rarely.

A friend of mine is a prosecutor. I didn't reach him on the phone for a while after he had to change his number after receiving threatening calls from an accuse he pleaded to be sent to jail. Another acquaintance, a criminal attorney, was threatened by a client with violence after he told him that he better turns himself in.

You deal with trouble professionally, you can get into trouble even with the best intentions and without any culpability on your part. Scum is as scum does. It's in the nature of the work, sadly.

Since in German courts there are metal detectors and people are being screened, there must have been a security lapse of some sort in this case that needs investigating and fixing.

WHAAA!?!? Defective German engineering product?!?!? It can't be! The metal detectors must have been imported from France or Spain or.....

Well, it couldn't have been the security people's fault! They are too well trained! ;)

    Tee hee!

That was one of the first things I thought of. My initial reaction was "They don't have metal detectors in German courthouses?" I cannot recall ever going to a courthouse and NOT seeing a metal detector.

Yup, whenever I went to court I had to deliver my Swiss army knife that I carry with me at nearly all times to security staff. And I always had them inspecting my ball pens and books. But I digress ...

I read up on the case and it turned out that the main court building was being renovated, in part to address security concerns and that, for the duration of the construction work, they were relocated to a provisional court building, with provisional security measures.

Reportedly, the accused in this case wasn't screened, it was a minor matter after all - the man didn't pay medical and social security insurance for employees, i.e. committed fraud, and faced a maximum sentence of up to two years - white collar crime, and hardly the sort of case in which violent behaviour would be expected. One out of the blue, hardly a comfort for the family of the prosecutor.

The model of the weapon in question, reportedly an FN 6,35mm (.25 ACP), is more than 50 years old, suggesting an inherited weapon that was never registered.

Tragic. Any idea what caused him to get murderously violent over a white collar crime?

    Dunno. He doesn't speak.

IMO plausible scenario: He owned a transportation company, which are sort of notorious for not having that awesome a cash flow. The prospect of finally having to do the back payments on medical and social security insurance for employees, ~ $ 50.000, coupled with the near certainty of facing an additional fine (people rarely go to jail for such crimes) was perhaps threatening his very economic existence. We shouldn't develop too much empathy here - all this is his own damned fault for which he is fully culpable.

But maybe he just snapped. Who knows?

Crazy. Going from a fine (albeit perhaps large) to a murder conviction (maybe first degree?). A tragic case all around.

Agree - I for one would rather spend years in debt than years in prison.

I took that as tongue-in-cheek. More like parroting a stereotypical immigrant hater.

    Same here....

I don't know. We had the thread in which some guy went to prison just to get some heathcare [in our country]. The world is a very strange place these days, because the economics are falling into chaos. I'm sure it's all Obama's fault. :p

    :exactly:

Anyway...on a related note, I just read that in Germany a 63 years old Judge was beaten severely, after he denied a dude revision.

    Justicia aeternum vale!

anyone who claims that one country is safer than another is in some ways deluding theirself, they are all dangerous in their way.

weve got a similar situation over here, you can wait weeks to see a GP (general practitioner) but in hospital thev get visited every 3 days by a GP. Some commit crimes because the living conditions in prison are better than how they live out here.
