This is probably a really stupid question but I want to get Jan into my party and he won't talk to me, I dont think Ive talked to him before so he can't be angry with me. Do I have to do a quest or something to get him

IIRC the first time you meet him in the govt district he almost gets busted for trying to sell you something. If you covered for him, he'll ask if he can join you or he can wait for you at his home in the slums. Don't know what happens if you let him get arrested.

    Heya,

next to the Copper Coronet (Slums) there's the "Jansen's Home" (i think that's what the map indicator says), someone there will tell you that "Uncle Jan's at the gov distr market selling turnips" or the like, maybe you have to talk to these fellas first.
Go for Jan ! He's not the best of mages, but the most funny. If you get in trouble with his limited capabilities, i recommend Shadowkeeper.

Sorry to disapoint you but I tried that already

The first time Jan starts talking to you, not the other way around. Whether this is time related (u might be too early in the game, or maybe even wrong time of day) or space related I'm not sure. He talked to me on Chapter 2, so u might try different times of the day. But also just try walking up to him from different directions, he should notice u and come up to u. The only other reason why he wouldn't want to know is if your reputation is in extreme high or low, since he's neutral. Hope this helps, and it's not a bug like I had in my BG1 where Minsc wouldn't talk to me at all.

Even if you get him busted, you can bail him out. Or something like that.

    ooops.

I just checked what Dan the Man had to say, and apparently if you refuse to talk to him the first time, you're outta luck. Too bad too, 'cause he's probably the best thief in the game. Or at least the second best.
okok, third, 'cause I'm the best!

Sounds like a 'ctrl Q' situation to me...

    Why, what does that do?

To get the cheats activated do these steps:

    Step One :) Open the game's directory C:bad:Program Files\Black Isle\BGII - SoA

Step Two :) Open the Baldur.ini file in notepad.

Step Three :) Find the line [Program Options]. Under it are a variety of settings for your game. Add this line:

    Debug Mode=1

And it must be Debug Mode=1, not debug mode=1 or anything else. Save and close notepad.

Step Four :) Now when you are in the game, press CTRL-SPACE to bring up the Console. This is where you will enter all the cheats.

hitting Ctrl Q ,allows you to 'recruit' whatever character the cursor is over at the time. You can recruit ANYone, although I suspect that you've screwed ol' Jan, and so will not get any of his dialogue. But he'll be in the party if you want.

This is a great tool to learn about the other characters in the game, and I don't just mean Minsc, etc. You can learn that Ribald is a 22 level thief (or whatever), the town crier is a 1st level mage, etc...
