Good news, I think :) Kudos for the judge for her courage to make a decision - and IMO the right decision - the D.C. administration doesn't want.

Hopefully it prompts a full review of the policies that led to Abu Graib and Gitmo in the first place, and some kind of policy statement from the US reaffirming a commitment against using torture to extract information, punish offenders, or amuse bored prison guards.

Confessions obtained by torture are obviously suspect. In all such cases, the desire to convict is greater than the desire to find the truth. An administration that was so dedicated would not hide its detainees--if that's the proper term--in offshore enclaves remote from scrutiny and appeal. Honest men do not work so hard to hide what they do. And what kind of moral barriers are being broken down in the torturers; what kind of men (or women) have they become; and what will they do when they return? Would you welcome one as a neighbor?

Bion: The policy statement has been made. By Bush, condemning torture, many months ago. Strange that it doesn't seem to have had any effect.

Still wonder if we'll see the criminal trial of anyone above the rank of sergeant.

All I can say is "thank you, God!"

Finally, some semblance of sanity appears to have emerged in all of this. I'm with Ziad about trials and accountability, but it's a step in the right direction.
