Is it free, or just a one-time payment thing? I have been looking for good free online MMOs, but they are very rare.

Its a one off payment thing. You buy the game thats it, no monthly fees. They release expansions to keep the money coming in and I'm not sure if they are implementing more microtransactions in part 2. There is a bit of that in part 1 but it was implemented later in its lifespan.

Guild wars 1 was fun, even for a single player like me. Still after all games get boring.I returned to it 2 years later with some expansions and played for an other month.

I stayed guild-less and did not play any Player versus Player. Only Player versus Area.

Yeah, part 1 is oriented more towards PvP. And you really do need a guild to get the most out of the game although unlike most MMOs, you can solo most of the game without playing with other humans.

Haven't posted any updates on this game in awhile. Here is the link to some major announcements they have made on the game (with some PVPonline guest comics illustrating the point): http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/

It has quite some interesting mechanics that they will introduce including the concept of a more dynamic game world. As an example, you can be wandering around and suddenly an army of monsters taking over a town. You can help defend the town and drive the monsters away (along with any other players in the area that joins in). If you lose the town, later when you come back to the area, you will find a monster camp that will then launch further attacks on the surrounding area. You can then try to recapture the town.

They have also decided NOT to have a healing class in the game. Anyone who has played MMOs definitely know how annoying it is where a healer is a valued and rare commodity that everyone wants in their party.

Yeah, but the reason parties want healers is so they have a better chance of staying alive in tough fights. Removing the class entirely seems an... interesting, response. Now the annoying problem of never being able to find a healer is absolute. Improvement?

Well, apparently every class has their own dedicated healing skill and other supportive skills that would heal or at least mitigate damage. It would be silly to remove all healing from an MMORPG.

Another update is up. This time, they have posted a video with the game designers talking about their manifesto for the game. And it is awesome. I really hope that they can live up to the claims though.

    Check it out at http://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/watch-our-mmo-manifesto-video.html

On a side note, it is great that the video featured a female game designer in an area that has long been dominated by males.

Frustrating thing about a lot of these MMORPGs is that they never really inform you of the system requirements and you end up having to sit through an and a half of installs just to find out your computer is too outdated to play them.

    Flyff was a huge mess.

This game is still in development, so I guess they won't announce the requirements until later or upon release. Guild Wars 1 had relatively low requirements for a game released at that time, so hopefully, the sequel will follow suit.

Well, I haven't put up any updates on Guild Wars 2 in awhile. It is now having a demo in Gamescom 2011.

Here is the trailer for Guild Wars Gamescom 2011:

Really loved the painted opening and soundtrack (by the great Jeremy Soule, who also scored KOTOR, Icewind Dale and Total Annihilation. One of the most talented composer in gaming today)
