What is the point of joining the "guilds" ? And how can I join dustmen? Is it connected to getting lawfull if in Harmonium or something like that?

When you join the factions you get a couple of more or less paltry little quests to prove your intent, and then they give you access to weapons and magic items unique to that faction.

There's a guy in the Gathering Dust bar that will recruit you into the dustmen if you want.

You can join the Dustmen by going to the Gathering Dust bar at the northeast Hive. Speak to Sere The Skeptic and Awaiting-Death and solve their problems before you speak to a man in the northeast section. Complete the quests asked. (the thief is by the market, and Soego is in the Dead Nations.)
