    Well, who's gonna be buring the mastermind of the 'Gunpowder Plot' in effigy tonight?

    {Historical note: see here. }

    Here in Newfoundland we really haven't kept the original significance of the what we call "Bonfire Night" in mind - we just have a few public bonfires (for warmth this year; our first snowfall in happening today! :lol: )

    So, I enjoyed saying to customers as they left "and have a happy Gunpowder Plot Day!" and then explaining who Guy Fawkes was and what was going on behind the 'holiday'; got a fair number of jaws to drop from unsuspecting people. Never got much in tips, tho.... :D

    Yeah, the fireworks were going off big-time in our neighbourhood last night. The Chinese certainly made a a good buck out of everybody this year. Actually, there seemed to be some good new fireworks this year that I had not seen before, but they did wake the kid up so that was not so flash. Anyway, I don't have enough spare cash any more to spend on fireworks.

    We were driving home last night--we live in rural southeastern Ohio--and were astounded to see fireworks exploding in the sky, major 3 inch shells, I think, being fired from a field twenty miles from any sizeable town. Some Brit thousands of miles from home was celebrating Guy Fawlkes Day.

    The fireworks scare my dog something terrible. She hates the things, they send her mental. She barks her head off and won't listen to me when I shout at her. It's strange because other times she's the most mild mannered dog ever and always does as she's told.

    Well, it's a few days late, but here's how Nfld. did with 'Bonfire Night'.

    Well below expected attendance at public bonfires, and one abandoned house, one semi-trailer and several dumbsters/tips destroyed by fire. T'would seem that 'the bad seeds' around here take the celebration and go a get destructive, much like Detroit always used to have MAJOR problems on 'Hell Night' (Oct. 31).

    But that list is SMALL compared to some years in the past, even for a 'cozy little town' of 150,000. I'm guessing the overall 'Newfie apathy' is boring into even the troublemakers' will to act. :heh:

    Indeed HB, I was most surprised to see Fireworks on sale in NZ. We were at Waitomo caves on the 5th, and were treated to a number of displays through the camper-van windows.

    Ah, free fireworks through the campervan window. Lovely.
