I'm about to finish IWD, and have just installed HoW. According to the HoW manual, you can either finish IWD and start Heart of Winter; or you can just go into it and finish IWD later. Are there advantages one way or the other? If I play a way into HoW, then finish IWD, will HoW shut down, making me start over? Is it an "insert" before the final battle, like ToSC was in Baldur's Gate? Or is it a genuine "add-on" like Throne of Bhaal? More to the point: Will my players lose all their equipment if I finish IWD before starting HoW?

Well that depends on how you start a HOW game, if you start it during your current IWD game you should finis HOW, because you can't go back to it after you beat IWD. but you can also wait until you beat IWD then import your party into an HOW only game, where they would start with all there equipment.
But my advise is to beat HOW during your current game, since that gives the greatest experience.
HOW is kinda like a game for it self, so it ads a totally new story, not related to IWD, but lvl wise I think you should go there before you beat IWD because afterwards it gets way to easy

I'm actually for beating IWD before going to HOW, because if you finish HOW whatever is left of IWD will be TOO easy. Even on Insane. Also, there's an item you get at the very end of IWD (when you can no longer go back to Kuldahar) which you can upgrade in HOW into something VERY potent.

I finished IWD then I started a new game 'expansion only'. That worked best for me.

And remember to get the 'Trials of the Luremaster' add on.

Also remember that the endsave removes any containers that you might have (so be sure to empty them before the final battle) :p

Probably best to do it after. I've started HOW once my party was levelo 13 (Minimum level to play it) and it really was too hard. Better to go in with a few more levels under your belt.

I had the same doubt and i was almost starting to play IWD from the start so i could do HoW for the 1st time.
But then Ziad talked about the upgradable item. So the question is: what item are you talking about?

    *SPOILER*

It's the sword you get from Johen when you return to Easthaven, you have to have done the sidequest for him to actually get it though, I forget the name, but it has a pretty cool story behind it and adds even more character to the game.

Thanks everybody. It seems I should finish IWD first. Thanks for the info about the "upgradeable" item. At least I won't sell it for scrap.

Actually you can't sell it... ;)

It's a nice item but not that powerful by the time you get there (yet my solo ranger found it handy).
