Glad to hear this. No more french bashing from America. Thats Britain's job. Hehe, kidding.

 

The truth is that no country can face an international threat alone, but all must co-operate...

 

I find it remarkable how much the feverish jingoism during and in the immediate time before the second Gulf War was able to cloud judgement on that. I had the opportunity to observe some of that here on the boards.

The U.S. reaction to France's 'non' was simply hysterical. You simply couldn't talk with some of these people, a few of whom left for good after the as Saddam- and French-loving as America-hating criticism here ... ... poor little puppies. Well folks, if you need that pat on the back so much, watch Bill O'Reilly for some emotional stability.

These folks didn't bother to notice that France was fighting Al Quaeda on their home soil already when the U.S. wasn't and that for them 9/11 was just another act in a series of terrorist acts that had started in the 1990s - on France's soil. I can still and very well remember the brutal bombings in Paris committed by Algerian fundamentalists.
Going through France at that time was a chilling experience, Paras, and Foreign Legion supporting the police in public places all over Paris.

They clearly understood that invading Iraq would (a) be a distraction in finishing off Bin Laden and Al Quaeda, and that (b) the unavoidable opinion backlash in the Muslim world after a U.S. invasion of Iraq would make Bush Osama's best recruiting sergeant, and would only prolong and make worse the fight the U.S. had to fight.

And voila, France was right. Afghanistan and Osama are still unfinished business, while Iraq continues to bind resources needed to deal with it.

But no ... the neo-cons and their eager claqeurs knew it all, already.
In a brief summary of their ... the ever appeasing, cynical French were only motivated by their greed, love for Saddam and, of course, cowardice ... it was a pathetic show of braindead U.S. flag waving - Freedom Fries being just the most significant and probably stupidest example of that.

What I find remarkable is that no one of them bothered to notice to the degree of cooperation between France and the U.S. and that they, in fact, have stayed close partners in a joint cause.

But hey, never bother with reality if it doesn't fit your doctrine.

It would hurt their fragile egos to give even a tiny bit of credit to France.

France is bad, m'kay.

 

Shame on you, Ragusa! You can't let truth in the way of bigotry and a good propaganda junket, especially when it helps the economy by reducing French imports and encouraging patriotic spending! After all, they did help the US gain independence - what have they done for them lately?
