You get more XP if you've got a henchmen due to the weird 3E XP rules. Your henchman will always be one level lower than you so this brings your Challenge Rating down, thereby giving you more XP per fight.

Strange as it sounds, but true.

TIP: before you level up, kick your henchman out of the party, level up, then invite him back. You'll have levelled up but he'll be the same level as he was before so you'll get more XP as a result in all the forthcoming fights.

This is not so. You get exactly the same amount of XP with a henchman as without one, but with a henchman along, it gets split in half. In other words, killing something worth 300 XP would get you all 300 if you were alone, and 150 if you have a henchman.

Also, if you have both a henchman and a familiar/animal companion, the XP is divided three ways.

I'm basing this on fact, Cross. I've played certain fights with and without a henchman and you get more XP with the henchman than without.

The way they work the XP out is based on your character level and the enemy's challenge rating (CR). If you're 5th level and you're facing an enemy of CR 5 (an average challenge for someone of 5th level) you might get 100 XP. If you faced the same enemy at 4th level you'd get more XP because it's a harder fight whereas if you faced him at 6th level you'd get less XP because it's an easier fight. Now if you have a henchman along your level is going to be slightly lower because your henchman is always a level lower than you are and they base CRs on the average of the whole party. If you're 5th level and your henchman is 4th level then your average party level is 4.5 (which I think they round down to 4). So fighting a CR 5 enemy gives you more XP than if you're on your own. Try it and see. Fighting a fire giant got me over 100 XP with my henchman whereas without it I got about 15 XP.

I tried it too. I got more when I had a henchman. Yes, it does seem strange.
