My first exposure to Hitchhiker's Guide was the BBC Radio series many years ago, and I loved it. Then the books came out, and I loved them as well, but I'm glad I heard the radio series first - it was one of those rare series where the characters' voices were better than anything I could have imagined (especially Marvin the Robot), so reading the books, and "hearing" the voices from the radio, was great.

The T.V. show sucked, though. No big surprise, since a low-budget show just wouldn't do justice to the special effects.

I also have my doubts about the movie.

Oh, I love the Guide. it is simply awesome... it is incerdibly hilarious at points, and yet very philosopghical at times. Absolutely awesome.

I am a huge fan ogf the Vogons :D Actually, I an mknown to quite a few people as "Vogoni"... thanks to my very bad poetry recitals. :p

I am currently reading through The Restaurant at the end of the Universe, and although I don't think it's quite as good as the Guide, I still laugh all the time and often say to myself, "Holy Crap! That's so true!" :D

I gave it a try once but could not bring myself to finish it. IMHO it is not very funny. Actually, I think it is quite boring. It still lies on my bookshelf somewhere. Maybe I'll look into it again...

The first 3 (of the 5 book 'trilogy') are pure brilliance, the latter 2 are still funny but the story is not quite so good.

Fabius - prove the stereotype "Germans have no sense of humour wrong" and try again. THGttU is fantasticly funny - pure comic genious.

No offence, but dig it back out and at least try it again. If you can get into it at all you really will not regret it.

Not only funny, but philosophically accurate.

The answer to the question of life, the universe and everything is SPOILER.

For those of you that read it, you'll know that means that you need to know what the question is before you seek an answer.

God's final message was really, really, really brilliant. As I was reading I was doubtful that he could live up to my expectation of having a brilliant message from God. Adams completely surpassed any expectation with his "S.F.t.I."
