Home network problem - access denied

    [​IMG] OK - after raving about having set up a home network, I now have a problem.

    I set up certain folders on my main PC so that they could be shared by my other PC. That worked for a while.

    But today, my other PC has had its access to the main PC denied. It can still use the internet, so it is still accessing the router OK and it can still an icon for the main computer but when I try and access files on the main PC it says that access is denied.

    Any ideas?

    Hmm... try going in My Computer, right click on 'Shared Documents' >> 'Sharing and Security' >> 'Sharing' and make sure both the boxes are ticked under 'Network sharing and security'. Try that first.

    Barmy - done that.
    Taluntain - why would Zone Alarms allow this one day but not the next? Surely I shouldn't need to kill the whole firewall?

    Have you made any changes that could affect the network after the last time it worked?

    ZoneAlarm should not block it as long as you have configured the local network as a trusted zone.

    What is the exact error message that you get?

    Harbourboy, just try it. ZA has its quirks, and sometimes it's much easier to disable it for 10 minutes to do what you need and then reenable it than to spend 5 hours trying to figure out the problem. At least you'll know for sure whether it is due to ZA if it works with it disabled.

    Well, it is the next day now, and everything works again. I have no idea what the problem was. I tried everything yesterday. I'd better go back and check all my firewall settings in case I disabled too many things and left my PC wide open.

    FYI - the problem WAS to do with ZoneAlarms (Taluntain is not just a pretty face). I had the home network set to be in the Internet zone on the laptop but in the Trusted zone on the PC. That is why the laptop was invisible on the network.

    Of course, this raises the question of why the laptop WAS visible the previous day, when the settings would have been the same......

    Anyway, now that the network is in the Trusted Zone on both computers, everything is fine.
