[HotU] Unfinished business in Undermountain

Both of these questions are about Undermountain level 2.

The central area has four places which seem unaccessible, all outside the circular corridor.
Are there secret doors to them, which i failed to find? Am i supposed to us the statues to get there somehow? Or are these places empty and unaccessible, placed on the map for no particular reason?

In the goblin halls {northern area}, there is a room with three shiny levers. The goblin persuing them said something along the lines of "Now that they have been harvested, let's see what Halaster's magic will do to them!", just before he maniacally impaled his face on my talking shortsword. Twice.
What was he refered to as having been harvested? What are these levers for? Nothing seemed to happen when i pulled them, other than the message that "You feel a discharge of magical energies".

 

1) You can get to all the areas in Undermountain. It you can either try and find all the secret doors or you can test your luck with the random portals.

2) I have heard that the mysterious levers determine what happens to you when hit by the dye from the goblin arrows. Which seems silly because by the time you reach the levers you have probably killed most of the goblins anyway.
