I've been told in the past that I have trouble doing full installation on some games because my firewall blocks it.

How can I temporarily disable a firewall so I can do this?

    TIA

    It depends on the firewall.

The one that comes with Windows XP (Service Pack 2) can be disabled from the Control Panel. Look for Windows Firewall (or for Security Center, and then Windows Firewall) and turn it off.

If you have Symantec's Norton Internet Security, right-click on the icon next to the clock in the Windows taskbar, and click on "Disable Norton Internet Security". Norton's will actually ask you whether you want to disable until next time you power on the PC, or just for some minutes.

For any other, the procedure will probably be similar to Norton's.

And if you have ZoneAlarm, just allow the program to pass when it asks it. ;)

Just remember that while you firewall is disabled, anything can creep in. And what games require you to access the net? :hmm:

Zone Alarm tells me that almost every game I've installed, wanted to access the net, sometimes when installing and almost every time I first run the game, as I don't play online, I always deny them access, and never had any problems playing them.
Oh, and never had problems doing full installs when denying access to the net neither.

Pretty much every game in the market nowadays. Even if the game doesn't have a multiplayer or online option, the installation package normally includes an Online Registration part, or an Online Update option. These programs may test your connection before even telling you whether you'd like to register, or update, and can cause a problem if the firewall doesn't like this.

I meant "Which games have mandatory online-registration procedure?" Thus far I know only one such system: Steam (Source-games, Half Life 2).
