    Hi,
I'm on a Uni network, and the computers here are all configured to work through a proxy server.

Now...I need to find out the proxy server details so I can enable stuff like IRC etc etc.

How do you do this on the computer?

If the proxy is manually configured in the computer, you can go (in Internet Explorer) to the "Tools" menu, and from there go to "Internet Options". Look for the "Connections" tab and click on the "LAN settings" button. Proxy info can be especified there.

However, in office and university environments, internet browsers are normally set up to find connection and proxy settings automatically, or to use a script stored in a network computer. If this is the case, you won't be able to find the options there.

Hmm...one of my friends said that usually proxy."generic server name" works...

So in my case, that would be proxy.uws.edu.au...I've tried this, and I've got Yahoo Messenger to work finally! :D

However...I'm having trouble getting bittorrent to run.

Usually...what port numbers do Bittorrent clients run on?

Your uni has probably firewalled its network, and as such torrent ports (and just about any port that's not HTTP and FTP, really) are closed. Therefore there probably isn't any way to get Torrent running, even if you do configure the proxy settings - you'll just be asking your Torrent software to use a port that's not there. I've had this problem with online gaming, since my home PC is hooked to the uni network for internet access.
