I'm new to this game. Anything I should know?

I've decided to buy Planescape: Torment. The thing is, I know next to nothing about it. I have played BG 1 and 2, so I think I have a fair understanding of the rules (if they use the same rules). I've also understood that it focuses a lot more on dialogue then other crpgs. But apart from that, I know nothing about it. So, is there anything I should know? Please, no spoilers

You get an ability point at every level-up. You will also have many opportunities to gain ability points throughout the game.

Wisdom is important (it gives dialog options and increases experience). Start with a high wisdom.

I also invest heavily in intelligence and charisma at the beginning.

In this game you can't die (unless you piss off a really powerful being -- there's only a few of those in the game). So, high constitution is not necessary (dex is only necessary for a thief). Con and dex are good to have, especially later in the game, but just not necessary at the beginning.

Your gameplay determines your alignment. Play the way you want (there is really only one alignment specific weapon -- you don't need it).

To add to T2Bruno's basic summary without giving anything particular away, your character plays a modified multi/dual class -- he can be fighter, mage, or thief, but only one at a time and, once he acquires the training in a class to "open" up that class to him, can switch back and forth with the proper triggers. (He starts as a fighter.)

As for the stat point, you only get one when you reach a new level overall, not per class. I.e., if your character is Fighter -5, Mage -3, Thief -1, you don't get a new stat point until one of your classes reaches level 6.

Do not read any walk-throughs, do not read any threads here because they are chock full of spoilers. Do not wreck your first run of this game, as there is no better game out there.

Indeed stay away from spoilers just play the game on your own - and talk to EVERYONE - the major focus of this game is dialoge and the knowledge you gain from it! Take your time and explore every nook and cranny and don't get tied up looking for the "best" option for your character - your alignment will be based on what you DO so once you have an idea of the sort of character you want to be stick with it and act accordingly.

I took several days off work just to stay home and finish this game when I got it... ;)

Several days off work? That's hardcore. But yeah, it's pretty awesome game.

Not much I can add without spoiling anything, but I will stress again on something T2Bruno already mentioned: Wisdom is the most important stat in the game. I wouldn't start it at anything less than 16 (maybe even 18).

Other than that, play the game exactly the way you like. The game will almost never penalise you for trying to roleplay your character, so just do whatever you want. (In the few cases doing something wrong is "bad", it's usually quite obvious from the context). Be ready for a lot of talking (most of it is excellent though). And even if you don't usually take many NPCs in this sort of games, you might want to make an exception this one time.

Well technically it isnt *that* important with high wisdom. you can always grab it later on. It is a fun/easy way to go though. I ahve played it without upgrading wisdom at all and it was fun :)

There are very few ways you can actually lose this game, and in most cases you can go back to a recent auto-save, so play the way you wish.

High wisdom and intelligence give the best gaming experience IMHO.

    And: Enjoy!
