    Everyone,

The short story- Today Tuesday January 10, 2017 my wife of 23 years passed away.

The long story- Lisa was first diagnosed with stage four breast cancer 18-19 years ago. She has gone through many rounds of chemo and radiation. She was a hell of a fighter and would consistently pound it in to remission. We would then have a great 3-5 years and then it would claw its way out of remission and spread to other places and we would start the cycle all over.

Unfortunately, this time it spread to her brain. We tried some very innovative technologies (Cyberknife) to try to beat it and it did work for a little bit, but eventually it was too much. The disease ate away at her memory which was a blessing and a curse. A curse in that she lost most of her memory of the past 6-10 years. A blessing in that she never knew how sick she was.

With the help of family and friends the ladies that will forever be known as Lisa’s Angels were able to help take care of her in the home while our son was in school and I was working. Eventually it was becoming too much and the day after Christmas I moved her to a hospice house. It was a phenomenal facility with a wonderful staff and they took great care of her.

In answer to the inevitable question: We are grieving but we will be OK. This has been a part of basically his entire life and over time we have learned to live with it. While incredibly sad and there are a lot of tears we know she is no longer in pain and that it would have been selfish to keep her around. I know in my soul that Ira and Claire (her parents) are taking care of her now, along with my Nanny Bea and Lisa finally gets to meet my mother.

I will be taking some time off to mourn and settle things.

Snook, I am so sorry to hear that. I know how a long illness can impact a family and take some solace in the strong network of support you obviously have. My condolences to you and your son.

You have my sincerest condolences as well. I've lost both family members and friends to cancer and I know how hard it can be (before and after the fact).

Make sure you take the time you need to grieve, both with your family and on your own. No matter how prepared you are, it's simply not something you move on from quickly or easily.

    My condolences. :(

That wasn't what I was expecting when I read the title. I've lost both my parents to cancer and I know the feeling of not wanting them to go, but not wanting them to have to endure the pain and waste away either.

You have my deepest sympathy as well, losing a family member to an illness like this is always a terrible thing.

    My condolences, Snook.

My father also died of cancer last year, painful, but we felt that at least he didn't have to suffer so much pain anymore. A small solace, but we take what we can get.

My heartfelt condolences, Snook. Most of our posts here are light-hearted enough, so we rarely consider the possibility of real-life tragedies happening behind the scenes. Until awfully sad news like this strikes. :(
