    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/18/20101128/tod-delhi-men-in-female-only-metro-force-451ab4f.html

So India is pro sexism now? men of course being made the weaker sex

sexual harassment happens to men too, this basically tars all men with the same brush, how can such blatant sexism have a place in modern society? The metroo in New Delhi has been over crowded for decades, alot of this 'sexual harassment' is quite simply, 'man's body touches woman's body' which is unavoidable on these congested cars.

so, women get their own carriages while men get packed in like cattle.

so, the women assult the men and then the men are humiliated in public even further.

by making all men feel like criminals?

surely this violates human rights law, men have the right to be equal, if this happened the other way around there would be a global outcry from woman's rights groups.

To make it fair they should have a woman car, a man car, and an orgy car. Problem solved.

Something tells me that this will not garner much outrage. As the departed Mordea used to raise the hue and cry about, you can discriminate all you want as long as you discriminate against someone who doesn't have "legal protections" prohibiting it. Men will forever be in that situation.

I'm five foot six and I keep hope alive that one day short people will gain that protected status.

Me, I am 5 1 1/2 feet and when I go berserk can scare big, burly, strong men over 6 feet. No one gets in my was. :D

I think the idea of cars for women, cars for men and integrated cars is a great idea. Nothing like trying to keep everyone happy. Which actually can't be done. What ever happened to having a little respect for each other? Wonder if that would work in New York city? Nah, only the very smelly homeless get their own car in the Big Apple.

Strictly my own personal opinion but I think a lot of this behaviour comes from deep seated anger. Anger at being treated as second class citizens for so long. Anger at being treated as sex objects or worthy only to be domestics, in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant.

It doesn't justify their behavior but I do understand it. The thing is that many men are still chauvinistic no matter what country they come from. Men and women are different and not just in certain physical aspects. Most women want to be liked and respected for who they are and not just because they are physically attractive. They want respect as human beings, as equals.

Unfortunately some go to extremes and thus defeat the very thing they desire.

    [doubts]
As always, I have many doubts. It appears to be a nice move, but I'm not so sure if it's the way to deal with it. It doesn't take away the root of the problem. Are day gonna have women only restaurants and offices too? And how are the women who travel in both sexes carriages looked upon? Now we say "You shouldn't wear a hoe's uniform if you don't want to be groped." (Which is a stupid excuse, btw, but still...) What's next? "You should travel in the women only carriages if you don't want to be groped."
The men that harass women should be punished. Or perhaps women can find a way to stand up for themselves and report these bastards. But that's easily said by a European man who's hardly ever been discriminated. I don't know what happens to the women that actually stand up for themselves. So maybe this isn't such a bad idea after all. Women can travel safely. I like that. So what's there to complain?

The complaint is the metro is getting crowded and there is apparently plenty of room in the women-only carriage.

I still think you have a point. Separate stores, restaurants, sections at the movies, theatres etc. No hassle, no fun.

What about transvestites and cross dressers?

Although I've never been to India I've noticed that in some countries men would willingly give up their seats to women regardless of the age or other considerations (meaning an old man would give up his seat to a young girl).

To be frank when you compare this to bigger issues like excision in Africa, the plight of commuting men in India becomes rather unimportant.

yes, but some womens rights groups say that this is sexism as well, aparently I was sexist when I held a door open for a lady but then left a man to hold it for himself.

when you think about it prince charming was the biggest sexist who ever lived, what it means to be a gentleman or chivalrous is sexism to these groups, they dont want gentlemen then want people who they can attack for anything. Its not about equal rights, its about girl power.

If you have a seperate carriage for women you should have a sperate carriage for all creeds and races - that would be equal.

yes, but were not talking about africa, were talking about a country which is trying to convince us that it is a modern civilised country, theyve just held the commonwealth games, and theyre still advocating sexism in society

You're hinting that India is not "civilized"? Do you want me to list all the things Indian civilization has contributed to the world and more particularly to Britain?

I'm sick and tired of the whole Western civilization/free world supremacy posturing that people take for granted. Hinting that there is no civilization outside Europe or the Western world implies a complete ignorance of the rest of the world (the larger part by the way).

If people could be bothered to abandon their misconceptions they could learn about other cultures and civilizations that are different from their own without feeling the seemingly irrepressible urge to judge them according to their own mores and their own values. A simple way to say that is people living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. I don't think that the Western world is in any position to look down upon the rest of the world as if inherently superior and "civilized" because when you stop to consider how things are you can't pretend that they're perfect or even that "civilized" (I loathe the implications of that word).

It's high time people discarded the outdated prejudiced view of the East that is just a remnant of colonialism and has no place in our day and age.

Yes prince Charming was a sexist, sexism is simply put treating people in a different way only based on their gender. So yes, opening the door for a woman but not for a man is sexism.

I agree. I always hold the door open for whoever is behind, whatever the sex. Who cares if it's a guy or girl. Maybe prince charming sexism comes from trying to help a sex you see as weaker, or maybe it's a subconscious way of flirting with a sex you like...

Or it's just something you were trained to do and there is no 'evil' intent whatsoever, in any direction.

The guys doing situps at the order of women in India is funny though. :D

no Im not, but I had alot more repect for India before I read about this crap.

    ... curry?

so, you support this sexism? its ok for the men to be treated this way to make women feel better?

that now is prejudice, it is OK for you to open a door, but the person behind you is not capable of opening a door for themselves, they could be older, ginger or gay, you could get youself into a serious prejdice bomb by over examaning the simple act of holding open a door - to totally get away from prejudice and sexism is impossible, because it would require you to never do anything for anyone.

And if they refused? or slapped the women back?

To be fair, Cara, I interpreted Shoshino's statement as the exact opposite. That India IS considered a modern society, yet they aren't acting like it.

I can't see how you could understand that phrase as meaning what you say. The idea which is hinted at and which seems to be taken for granted is that the West is civilized (in opposition to the East) and that we are the ones who are entitled to judge how civilized others are.

I may have been swayed into thinking that my interpretation had been wrong if it wasn't for the "curry" remark which is proof enough that what was meant was not what you think...

Some people may believe that being civilized means being a white Westerner but that only proves their ignorance and their prejudice. You can take any so called "modern" and "civilized" Western country and if you look around you will find things that are anything but "civilized" so who's to assume that Indians are uncivilized when the Indian civilization (FYI I'm talking about the Indian subcontinent and the Indus Valley) goes back to the dawn of time.

I really don't care for all that ethnocentric bull.

What? How is opening a door for anyone regardless of age, sex or any other characteristic, prejudice? I don't understand your argument at all. It's not a question of they can't do it, it's just being nice to people, so they don't have to make the effort of opening a door. It's not that I think i'm better than them, it's just being nice. The original point of this was because opening a door to a woman but not a man is sexism in a way because you don't act the same towards both sexes.

I don't know if eliminating all prejudice and sexism is possible, just as being completely objective and unbiased in impossible. But it doesn't mean you can't try and it doesn't mean that everything is prejudice.
