Java runtime problem

[IMG] I'm playing an online game, Runescape, and when I went in to play, I got this puzzle piece icon and nothing else. I clicked and downloaded Java Runtime version 5.0. I thought it was an update or some such and continued along my merry way.

While in Runescape, I got lost and brought up the world map to find out where I was. When I minimized the map window, there was a big, white square on the main game window. This didn't disappear after a minute, so I clicked the refesh button and got booted back to Runescape's main menu. :(

Other problems include game freezes (can't log out or click on anything), no music, no sounds and no cursor info (hold the cursor over something/one and find out what's there or a name). I know these can be attributed to online lag, but after three days of this, I decided to take the initiative and removed the Java runtime via Add/Remove programs. The exact program name is J2SE RunTime Environment 5.0 update. The game ran fine - sounds, music, labels, etc. - as it did before the download.

I played for another three days, then that darn puzzle piece cropped up *again*! I couldn't access the game without clicking on this. <grr> I downloaded Java, played with more problems and deleted the files from my harddrive.

I've looked around on the Jagex site for help but not finding much. I'm not a member, so cannot post questions on the boards. I have Windows 2000 with a GeForce 440MX card and 512MB RAM. The browser(s) I run the game on is(are) Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. Jagex reccommends Explorer to get the sounds, yet I have more problems with it than with Firefox! I had abso-smurfly *no* problems *before* being forced to download and install Java.

So, as a newbie would do: Help!

Well, I've been playing for a week without Java and the game's hunky-dory. No more problems. I can't get my scores on MSN Gaming Zone to be tallied, though. Just thought to let you guys know.
