I'm still reading it, but if nothing else, it's definitely something that will change how I view Soule's works from this point onward. Something like this, if true, is obviously the end of Soule's career in video game music, at least. For those not familiar with Soule, he's the man behind the Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights and SW: KotOR music, among many others.

There's also this apparent KS scam story I learned about when reading up on Soule. Wow, just wow.

I don't think anyone's purported criminal behavior would change how I feel about their work. In my mind those are two separate things.

In general I prefer to leave punishment to the courts. I do realize in cases such as these it's hard to prove anything one way or the other; it's doubtful he will face any repercussions legally. Why should I take it upon myself to pass judgement having seen no actual evidence of anything? However in today's MeToo climate it could very well cost him his career.

If I felt someone got away with criminality (i.e. got off on legal technicalities or something) would I then choose not to patronize them? Perhaps direct patronage, but would I also boycott companies that already paid them for their work as a way of discouraging them from being hired? I doubt it.

As to Soule's alleged criminal acts: Hopefully he gets what he deserves.

As with all allegations these days...

Honestly, I think this tidbit is far more interesting:
Who's gonna believe Zoe Quinn's rape allegations, of all people?

Well, there we go. Both Soule and Holowka have now lost their current job based on nothing more than unsubstantiated allegations made by questionable individuals. This is the "brave new world" that we live in, where a couple of blue checkmarks on Twitter can ruin your career, maybe your whole life, without a shred of evidence of any wrongdoing.

Well, if they're innocent, I assume that they'll be promptly suing their accusers for libel and loss of income and so on. @dmc & @Beren can probably explain better what their options are in this case.

Yeah, in some of the recent cases, the accused have taken legal action and got some form of compensation. Unfortunately, even if one is later proved innocent, the damage is done and a lot of people hold no remorse because of the whole "believe rape victims" mentality, which is basically just a regression to the old draconian "guilty until proven innocent" principle. It doesn't even matter if the accuser is a pathological liar and an all-around pathetic excuse for a human being (like Zoe Quinn), as long as it's a woman and she's accusing a man (especially if he's white), all reason immediately flies out the window.

Well, this just turned even more morbid. After all the shit he's been through in the past week or so, Alec Holowka gave in to his depression and took his own life.

If you needed any more reason to hate Twitter and the culture we live in, there you have it.

Internet culture in general, it's not like it's limited to Twitter alone.

Baseless accusations, from someone fairly well known to sleep with men for personal gain many times before, and the guy loses his job and takes his life. Nice. Another high point in Twitter / Tumblr / whatever.

Oh look, a known liar proven to be lying. Who woulda thunk it?

    https://www.thepostmillennial.com/exclusive-zoe-quinns-allegations-are-falling-apart/

The real tragedy is that this whole incident is likely to be forgotten in a few months and Quinn is going to continue leeching money from gullible folks simply on account of having the right set of genitals. Where's some good ol' social justice when you actually need it, eh?

Holy shit, not only is this woman not taking any responsibility for her actions, she re-activated her Twitter account to proclaim that she's the victim in all of this because people are demanding even the smallest shred of evidence for her allegations. And, of course, she couldn't wait to tell everyone that she got hired by DC to make a comic book for them now that she's got plenty of attention from this whole tragic saga. I honestly didn't think I could despise someone as much as I do her.

Haven't heard any news on the Soule case though, other than the fact that he denied the allegations, but he would do that regardless of his actual guilt.

I believe I saw a message from someone, expressing his/her support for Quinn because it had to be hard on her when Holowka killed himself after her accusations, and donating some money to her. People really only see what they want to see.

And for Quinn, apparently she can only see herself as blameless, anything that happens to her, or around her, is apparently someone else's fault. Another of those fairly common traits, though the extremes she seems to take it to, almost makes me think that she's somewhat of a sociopath.

Haven't really chimed in here because I know nothing of any of these matters (the facts relating to these accusations). With regard to the larger issue of who should be believed and what recourse is available, well, that's one hell of a can of worms.

For most, if not all, of modern history, rape crimes, unlike any other type of crime, carried some built-in extra protection for male defendants and the laws as written and/or implemented have been used to essentially make it as difficult as possible to get convictions. Not in an "innocent until proven guilty" manner, but as in "she was dressed in a way that excuses what he did - she was ASKING to be raped" sort of thing. Societal stigmas relating to sexuality and the double-standard between men and women made being a rape accuser/victim a situation where a woman was victimized initially with the rape, again during the investigation, again during the trial, and often again thereafter. That's not an easy path to take and many women have simply not come forward because they understood what they were facing.

So, now, it appears that the pendulum is swinging in the other direction. More credence is being given to accusers' stories than in the past and, probably, too much in many cases. Not sure what you do about that until the dust settles and we see how things are being implemented.

But that's all on the criminal side of things. On the civil side of things, you are not entitled to a job if you have rape allegations against you, and there is no "innocent until proven guilty" in the arena of public opinion. (Just as an aside, I can only speak with knowledge on US law, I have no idea if things are treated in a completely different manner elsewhere.) However, if someone defames you, and a false rape allegation is per se defamatory, then you have civil recourse against that person that can be measured by the entire economic harm done to you, and punitive damages as well. Caveat there is that the person who defamed you has to have the ability to pay or you get a pretty piece of paper that is worth nothing. This Zoe Quinn person may very well be the biggest liar and sociopath around, but she is getting the benefit of the doubt here, I would presume, based on the above. However, I would also suspect that if these allegations are proven to be false, or even just shown to be highly dicey, then she is not going to have an easy time obtaining future employment because no one is going to want to hire someone who might turn around and accuse them of something false and heinous.

The allegations have already been put into question by her own posts at the time of the alleged crime. Not to mention there hasn't been a single person who could corroborate her story. But the accused is dead now and dead men tell no tales. Yet, in spite of everything, even knowing her past, DC offered her a job, so she'll probably get off scot-free and people will take Alec's suicide as an admission of guilt.

Also, while men accused of rape did historically have a good chance to fight the allegations in court, let's not also forget that male rape or abuse victims had and still do have it much worse. In some cases, because of how rape is legally defined, they can't even bring rape charges against a woman. Rape cases are a shitshow in court either way, but inciting a witch hunt without even trying to go through official channels first makes you the bad guy, I don't care how bad you had it. That's just anarchy and has no place in the modern society.
