    His_Stats.

Hanging with another like-minded Baseball fan last night, we started the HoF conversation. The conversation turned to Jeter, being an obvious talking point with his career about to end. My buddy seems to think they have always over-hyped Jeter and he really isn't s super-star and not Hall worthy. I completely disagreed. There are tons of highlight films of him making great plays or coming up with big hits in pressure situations. He's an 8 time 200+ hitman. Can you say Rod carew, Pete Rose, Tony Gwynn? 358 career steals. 14 ASG appearances including an MVP, 5 Gold Gloves, 5 Silver Sluggers and a World Series MVP. Let alone 3,461 career hits and a .309 career Batting Average. Also 1,307 RBIs and over a 1,000 career walks. Impressive by any means.

I'm guessing your friend's viewpoint is tainted by the fact that Jeter is an a**, which he is. :p So are a lot of other baseball players though.

There's no denying his talent and accomplishments. Last time I checked, being a nice guy wasn't a prerequisite to getting admitted to the Hall of Fame.

Ty Cobb made it (the epitome of an a$$). Jeter will also make it, although probably not on the first ballot.

I'm not sure why everyone had to give him a farewell at the different ball parks -- he certainly wasn't a Rivera.

Edit: Well Mrs Bruno took me to task on Jeter. We were talking and I said I really didn't understand the big send-off. Most of the personal stories I'd heard weren't very flattering of the guy (the usual story I read is about him taking women out in various cities and stiffing them with the bill). But she pointed out a few things:

    - He won the Roberto Clemente Award for his Turn 2 program (getting kids off drugs).
    - His parents are both school teachers and he helps education in NY, Florida (spring training), Michigan (home state), and others.
    - One of the most cool headed players in the game. You never hear him talking bad about someone.
    - He doesn't brag or put on a show when he does well and takes the blame for mistakes.

    T2 is a very wise man . . .

(Off topic - and not a bad author if he would ever get off his behind to edit his work . . .)
