    I am a monk changing to bard.

    How can I do this without 'cheating with codes?'

    I need to go from lawful to neutral.

    Also, what is the fire opal for in act 2.

    I'm not sure which module you are playing, but I think the fire opal appears in chapter 2 of the OC. If that is the case, there is no way for you to change your Lawful / Chaotic alignment without an editor. The OC only supports changes in Good / Evil alignment.
