[IMG] Alrighty, I haven't read the books, and I never got to finish the movie, for when I recorded it, the volume got screwed up, and there is no way for me to fix it... CURSES!!!

However, from what I've seen, I've liked it alot. I mean, it wasn't the best movie effects and such, and Shawn Ashmore could have been a bit stronger, but I liked the plot, characters, and the way they used magic (which, unlike LotR, is actually used in this).

    Any thoughts?

And since I have heard many people bashing it because the book was supposedly better, I would like to see what people at Sorcerer's think.

I thought it was good for a TV miniseries, but since most TV miniseries are unwatchable IMO, it was merely OK as movies go.

I have not read the books either, but I would imagine they were much better if this miniseries followed the story of the books. Since the main theme was the passage of a foolish, impatient and headstrong boy making terrible mistakes into a thoughtful and wise wizard in trying to atone for/ correct the mistakes, a 4-hour miniseries just wouldn't be able to do it justice like a series of books would.

I haven't seen the movie, but I read the (first three) books 20+ years ago. They were excellent. I have not read a bad story by Ursula K. LeGuin.

I read somewhere that LeGuin herself hated the mini-series and was deeply offended of the liberties the makers had taken with her creation.

The miniseries was a mish mosh of the first two of LeGuin's books, bound together by some ridiculous backstory and romance that never, EVER happened in the written version. The third book was completely ignored.

It wasn't a bad story as TV-fare goes, but it couldn't hold a candle to the story told in the trilogy. We deleted it from the TiVo promptly after watching it - definitely not one for the permanent archives. It will, however, make me re-read the books.
