Breach to knock down the spell protections then attack him with melee weapons.

If you have a high level cleric, turn him or cast sunray.

If not, hack away with flail of ages so that the elemental damage hits through his protections and disrupts his spells.

Try to knock him off quickly!
    Thief: Trap next to tomb
    Mage: Breach!
Cleric: Sunray, False Dawn, Turn Undead
Warrior: Daystar, Ring of the Ram, Mace of Disruption, any +3 or greater weapons

Failing run away, wait for his spell protections to wear out and go back for seconds.

Not really fair, but a scroll of protection from undead works wonders.

Aye, but there are not very many of those in the game, so if you were to use one, it should be against some of the more difficult Liches (Kangaxx, the Lich in the Bridge District, etc)

Either Mace of Disruption or Azureedge. Both have a good chance of killing liches with a single hit.

Anything other than that will require stripping his protections down, which can be a pain if you're low level.

Turn Undead, sunray (have 2 in case the lich makes his save), Protection from Magic scroll on the lich (total cheese :D , so save that for Kangaxx) or for a F/M:
    Spells:
Prot. from Evil (cleric), Resist Fear, Mirror Image, Blur, Chaotic Commands, SI: Conjuration, Prot. from Fire (spell, potions or equipment), True Sight, Remove Magic and Spell Shield

Delay him with a wand of summoning, he will happily waste all of his deadly spells on lesser summonings,(gnolls and hobgoblins LoL!) just be sure to stay away from him and constantly use the wand to summon near him each round so he will always be busy and waste more spells, NOT on you ofcourse! This works wonders even on 'Tactics way too smart' liches and mages! Once he is out of big spells he is a cake.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned improved invisibility..

Don't many temples sell prot. from undead scrolls? I seem to remember having 8 or 10 in one game in my scroll case.

I like using project image/simulacrum/summons/nishru and wizard eye to wear him out (Attack with the wizard eye first. It is improved invisible and actually tough to kill unless it's dipelled). Then send the summons as it attacks the eye. Hit 'em with breach and protection removals next from the image/simulacrum, then after the summons tire him out pound 'em with good weapons (haste, P.O.E. and all that stuff too). Basically iI just hit them with everything I've got. Ring of ram is nice especially if you have 2 of them  . Daystar is awesome.

I need to try silence on one....make him waste a round or 2 vocalizing.

I read somewhere that polymorphing into a mustard jelly is highly effective but I've never tried it.

You could also trap the heck out of him with a thief but thats a little cheesy..

I did the twisted rune once and killed the lich before he got his defences up. It was a long time ago...I remember having the archer summons guys and hiding my mage in the corner while attacking with arrows (Yoshimo and Minsc). He died before he teleported off the table and I couldn't get the staff because it was in the middle of the table and I couldn't reach it! That really stunk but it was really kewl too ...

^Err, AFAIK the lich does not have the staff, it is other female caster who carries it. And I don't think a lich will be affected by silence at all. Anyway...

In my games liches see invisible but I made them smarter so...

It is soo funny when they both have Spell Immunity:Abjuration and Divination, (they become virtually uıntouchable) have a killer improved PitFiend who has 6 attacks/round, disease, slows the target and forces a save vs death or kills instantly, cast 20 HD fireball (it hurts) and has many demonfears and remove magics. Add the fact that lich gets angry when he can not see anybody and cast a cheesy Teleport field who summons the entire party next to him and dispels every protection, Pitfiend attacks for the kill and lich starts a Timestop... :D I like the fun! Smarter liches and mages rock! They also cast and then attack with Melf's meteors to make the best use of time, and has smart triggers: Improved Inv+F.shield Red+Blue on self: They look cool! AND remove magic, Chain Light+Chaos on enemies (it hurts!) Did anyone try them? :p Regular stupid liches are a walk in the park to me!

 Ofcourse! I used DF on DOUBLE liches in Improved As(s)ylum! And it worked wonders! Two cloudkill is enough to kill them fast and they can not cast a single spell! It was cool! Incendiary Cloud (or fog?) is more dadly but tactics liches frequently has Pfromfire which is impossible to dispel so... Acid damage is perfect for them though! Thanks for reminding this! :thumb:

Err your right about who has the staff Silverstar...the point, however, was that I killed the Lich before he got off the table and couldn't get the loot that was there so I had to replay it... When I realized I couldn't get the loot I reloaded so I didn't get the staff either way. I just remember being very happy and very mad at the same time hehe.

Also I was thinking the Power Word Silence...not Silence 10'. Sorry if i was unspecific.

The problem with death fog/cloudkill I imagine is the radius. Aren't Liches often in very confined areas?
