London Bombing and G8

    I realize this may look cynical, and apologize in advance to anyone who may feel offended by such speculations. However, recently I read an article that hit a point: that the attacks might be timed in order to disrupt G8 and an idea that may cost them a lot of popularity, and eventually lose support: the increase in debt relief for which Blair has been fighting. If he could persuade Bush and the other G8 members to cancel debts and provide more aid, this may disrupt the "evil oppressor and materialist" image many terrorists are trying to put on their opponents. In a sense, Bush is a much more likeable enemy - he's easier to portray as a threat to all a poor Muslim/African/etc. holds dear, while Blair risks becoming considered a "good guy". Whether Blair's proposals are earnest, and whether the relief he proposes will be "no strings attached" or related to particular measures taken like liberalization of the market and more permissivity for various international organizations is irrelevant - it is the possibility of him and the West becoming popular that the terrorists were trying to fight.
