    Hi,

I am trying to play Kensai/Mage solo Core rules where death means to start new game and I am dying usually because of traps.

I was not able to find any spell that can detect traps?

Is there any detect traps spell for Mage?

    Thank you for tips!

The best ways for a mage to deal with traps is the various protection spells it has. Mirror Image has a good chance of negating a trap and is I think your best protection against traps. Other protection spells may work too, but are kind of situational and you probably need to know what kind of damage you'll be up against.

The detect traps spell is not a mage spell, it's a cleric spell.

I believe [minor] Spell Deflection will negate most of the magical traps. Stoneskin doesn't seem to help like it should for the physical ones, but they aren't usually the super-deadly ones if you have the maximum HP on level up enabled and are at full health. The mirror image might work too.

So, cast mirror image and a spell from the deflection family. Too bad there's a ring of spell turning but not spell deflection.
With some, globe of invulnerability will help too.

And the detect traps spell isn't as useful in BG2 as it is in NWN, where a cast of detect traps would also disable the traps, rather than just make you aware that there's a trap that you can't avoid anyway, like in BG2.

True enough. I also find the monk's "detect traps" ability almost useless, since even when you know the trap is there, there is often nothing you can do about it but set it off.

It's why a few years ago I asked about giving them the ability to detect illusions as well. Dispelling those annoying shadow doors, mirror images, misleads, etc that enemy mages like to cast is far more useful, especially if you try to solo.

For the record, while it's more fitting in the spirit of AD&D to give a gradual increase in ability until level 20, I found it more fun and less frustrating to set it to 99% at level one.

Anyways, after going off on a tangent, the only thing it can be useful for is knowing to cast your buff spells to survive the trap if you don't have a thief.

I thought the monk detect traps did dispell illusions? Seem to recall it working that way when I played through a solo with a monk last year or so. Could be part of a mod/fixpack, though. I know for sure the monks in Amkethran had an ability like this, thought that of course doesn't mean that it's a native monk ability.

No, and for some reason I thought there was more to the thread I linked to. I could have sworn I got advice on level progression and which file to modify. I don't recall posting the question elsewhere, but I must have.

Either that or the follow-up posts were accidentally lost when Taluntain got rid of the modding subforum and merged it into the ToB forum.
