I was thinking of making my own campain setting, rather than spending money for other stuff. But then I realized that that would require so much work........... all the gods and geography and countries [trade, government, relations, etc.] It seems like such a big job, I'm wondering if its worth just buying the books or if any one has some suggestions on making my own.

First of all, it's campaign. With a "g". Anyways...

If you're going to make a homebrew world, it has its ups and downs, IMHO. If you're making a world for the sake of making a world, I don't see why you just can't use a premade campaign, such as Forgotten Realms (despite its total, well, bad-ness), Greyhawk, etc. I'm pretty sure there are online campaigns that you can just adapt to your own.

If you're going to make a campaign based around a significant event that is best suited for a custom world, I would suggest that you make a homebrew world then. This way your setting is a bit "different" from others, and stands out in that respect. But you really should read the DMG, FR Campaign Setting, and anything else that gives you ideas on world building.

Here are two sites that should help: 3ednd.com, and 3rdedition.org . The former, you can get a demo of Campaign Cartographer 2. The latter, I recommend you read the Articles on world-building.

    Hope I helped.
