Has anyone seen this movie? I thought it was okay, but too much background information was missing, Pumpkin was not fat (young or old), and Mameha was older than expected (not a big deal, but still!).

I thought it was very arrogant of Rob Marshall to use Chinese actors known to the US (in cheesy martial arts movies no less!) instead of the thousands of talented Japanese actors (though Michelle Yeoh is very beautiful). The movie would have been better if it was filmed in Japanese, rather than English as a lot of the actors could not portray the confidence they had in the book.

I've seen the film a few times and quite enjoyed it, though, as always, the book was better. Whoever played Hatsumomo (is that the actress you mentioned) was awesomely hot.

That's what Hollywood is about though, convincing the audience to step through the door. What better way to do that than with 3 Chinese actors the American audience is already familiar with?

I thought they could have made room for Chaiki Kuriyama though (sorry if I mispelled that). Maybe they thought movie-goers couldn't separate her from Go Go Yubari. *shrug*

Doesn't this movie have the same or similar storyline of 'Dangerous Beauty'.

Basicly, it follows the life of a courtesan, her trials, triumphs, and her lovers?

BTW, if any of you are wondering what the exact storyline of 'Dangerous Beauty' was, here's what I found at the IMDB :
"In 16th century Venice, courtesans enjoy unique privileges: dressed richly in red, they read, compose poetry and music, and discuss affairs of state with the men who govern the Republic. When Veronica Franco comes of age, she cannot marry Marco Venier, whom she loves, because she is well born but penniless. Her choice: cloister or courtesan. She steels her heart, and with beauty and intelligence becomes the best. She's a heroine when she helps convince France to aid Venice in war with Turkey, but when plague descends, the Church charges her with witchcraft. At her inquisition, she must match wits with an old rival, speak for all women, and call courage from Venier."

I'm sure the storylines to "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Dangerous Beauty" aren't going to be exactly the same, but to me, they sound very similar. :rolling:
